Corona & Leffe ~ Fish & Chips on Beer Saturday

avatar

Hello Hivians and all you beer lovers.

Saturday on Hive of course means it's time to write about the good old amber nectar or Beer and today's no exception for me.

This morning I had a mystery shop to do at our local pub. The only drawback was that it was scheduled to be done between 9am and noon.

But it is free beer , free food plus we would be in town hitting some charity shops anyway, so no drawback in reality!

Would I have a beer with my Scottish breakfast? Let's find out!

Corona & Leffe ~ Fish & Chips.png

image.png

Answer ... Two different beers 🍺🍺

I had done a quick check on the interwebby and seen that their main meals were served from 11.30am. So if I got there before 11.30 it would be a fry up.

But did you know that yesterday was a special day! That determined the food!

11.25am pub is pretty full!

image.png

It was quite lively in there, and by the time we got a booth table, had the waitress clean it, decide what to eat etc the time was after 11.30am!
image.png

Drinks arrived ...

image.png

Look at the smooth creamy head on that!

Can you guess what the two beers were?

In the meantime Mrs T wanted a cup of coffee.

image.png

Self serve white coffee served by yours truly

image.png

To be fair the coffee is pretty good, it is also unlimited refills for £1.19...

You can stick your fluffing Starbucks up your hooha!
image.png
image.png

I have to admit I have taken the laptop there and spent a few hours in the winter there before. Great place to get some work done cheaply.

Food was ordered

image.png

Mexican Corona or Belgian Leffe

image.png

To lime or not to lime?

I must admit I prefer the Leffe, maybe the strength has something to do with it!

image.png

Artsy trio ~ or foam for three!

image.png

image.png

Cheers

First up I had the Corona

Probably because it has the lime, you will see why in a second I preferred having the citrus here, or having the best last!

image.png

Pint 1 Corona

I am not going to tell you about the brewery and beer stats etc as I have done that before!

image.png

A world-famous pale lager from Mexico, Corona Extra is light-bodied, crisp, and refreshing. Its mild flavour is famously enhanced by serving it ice-cold with a fresh lime wedge.

image.png

Thank you Mr Gemini AI and here is that lime wedge that plopped into the glass!

image.png

Corona finished ... onto second pint

image.png

image.png

Pint 2 Leffe

Food Up!

Fish and Chips!

National Fish and Chip Day 6th June 2025

Yes yesterday was National Fish and Chip day yesterday!

Who fluffing knew?

Not me until today lol. So Mrs T said she fancied fish and chips. Me too said I!

image.png

I doused mine in a sauce that I never have unless it is on my fish!

Can you guess the name?

And the green things... are called ...

Mushy Peas

image.png

The notice!

Yes there was no garden peas on the menu, which was fine as I am partial to mushy peas!

What about you?

image.png

image.png
There you go, two pints of lager. Not my drinks of choice but they are free so I ain't complaining!

image.png

image.png

My Verdict

To be honest I think the corona is a bit insipid and the lime was a gimmick when it arrived on these shores all those years ago.

Leffe I do like as it is stronger. It also seems to be more malty that may be a reason I prefer it!

What about you... do you drink these lagers?

In my next life, I want to have a job like yours, Ed!!!! I also want to know a place where there are free beers. hahaha. I've only tried Corona, although I haven't for a while. Maybe I should look for it on my next visit to the supermarket. Thanks for the invite! I think the invitations should come with beers included. hahaha. I'm already making my post. A nice Saturday and refreshing hug.

Oh yes an invitation should be a beer included invitation lol! I shall be waiting for the post and yes see what other beer they have that might be different from what you normally have? A big beer hug today Nancy :)

Beer with a late breakfast sounds awesome. I would go with the Leffe beer along with you.

Yes it was raining too, so a beer was more than welcome! The Leffe is always a good safe bet

1240 ... long sell by date on that beer!

I usually get the mini fish and chips.

The batter looked pretty dark and I was a bit disappointed but when I tasted it, it was still tasty!
How mini are the mini fish and chips I wonder.

That's a good job, especially with free food and beer, you can't ask for more. My wife would love to go to a place that has unlimited coffee refills, hahaha.
I was surprised that they get Mexican beer. Do you know if they also get Polar beer? It's very easy to get in Spain since the number of Venezuelans in that country has increased. Have a great day, my friend @tengolotodo. A big hug from Maracay.

Oh they have had Corona for years. It was all the rage a long time ago when people put a wedge of lime in the bottle.
I have never seen Polar, but I will look for it as I @nancybriti1 shows me the special cans!
Have a wonderful weekend Irvin :)

Corona to me is beach beer, because that's everywhere on the beaches in the Caribbean. Otherwise with food you want something with more flavor and body. Good call, the fish looks awesome too!

Yeah I was surprised how Corona caught on in the UK years ago. The fish was good, often what I order when I go out.

I didn't think I was going to have time to read this post today, but then you mentioned fish and chips and I knew I had to check it out! This looks pretty delicious! I haven't had fish and chips in far too long.

Hehe I got you with the fish and chips. To be honest I saw the darker batter and was half tempted to say something to the waitress. But it was delicious and the batter was soft, so I presume they were trying out some different frying oil or something.

That or the oil was just a bit dirtier. I guess I don't get fish and chips enough that I even would have been bothered by the color of the batter! :)

lol well it is our national dish and something I was brought up on, so batter colour and texture we pretend to know all about!

I see you've been busy 😋, but if the beer is free, you take it. 🍻
Both beers are global brands, but I prefer Leffe too. Cheers!

Yeah I think Leffe is more of a beer than Corona, plus it is closer to home too!

Fish and chips without mushy peas should be made illegal, what no curry sauce?

lol mushy peas are good, but I must admit when I have fish and chips from a chippie I never think to ask for mushy peas, not a big thing up here.

The fried Mars bars were made but who knows where, probably in bits of Glasgow I imagine lol

What about you... do you drink these lagers?

It depends. When I'm out with friends, I'd rather have a Corona.
With fish and chips I'd rather have a Leffe.
Although there's nothing like a good old pint of Guinness.

Guiness is cool, but I do prefer Blackheart as a dark stout.

I think i Drink that beer when I was on a business trip in London. We had lunch at a BrewDog pub on Waterloo station. Our hosts recommended black stout. If that was Blackheart beer then I totally agree it's excellent. I still prefer Guinness, probably because it was the first dark stout I ever had.

Yeah Blackheart is from BrewDog so if it was a BrewDog pub then yes you probably had Blackheart. Lol being Scottish I have to go with the Scottish option. But Guiness is still good especially if that was your first.

I was thinking in that match up there could only be one winner, Cheers too the Leffe 🍻🍻

Totally agree with you on the Corona... feels like it’s just an excuse to drop a lime in and call it a vibe. Leffe, though, now that’s got some backbone. Maltier, stronger, and way more satisfying. Cheers to free pints and happy surprises 🍻

Yeah Leffe is much more of a beer, would be a good pint in the brewpub you shared!
