BEER with Fish & Chips on the River Tay

Hello Hivians and all you beer lovers.

It's Saturday, which means it's #beersaturday, not that you need an excuse to drink a beer!

BEER with Fish & Chips on the River Tay.png

A couple of weekends ago we were up in Perth for a festival that Mrs T wanted to attend on the Sunday.

Perth is a gorgeous wee city, so I said we would make a long weekend of it.

image.png

I suggested we go to this pub for a beer and a bite to eat...

The Capital Asset

Can you guess what the building used to house?

image.png

The one great thing about Wetherspoon's pubs is that situate themselves in old beautiful buildings and look after them.

The Capital Asset pub in Perth was originally a savings bank.

This was built to house the Perth Savings Bank and opened in September 1876. The building was designed by City Architect Andrew Heiton. It was a bank for a long time, but after it closed, it was briefly a nightclub before becoming a Wetherspoon pub.

image.png

One thing that Wetherspoon's likes to do is to have flowers outside. Either hanging baskets or boxes like these.

image.png

The view from the pub

image.png

150 years old and it sit's on the banks of the River Tay that has been known to flood many times. Did you see the steps up to the entrance of the building?

image.png

My ulterior motive

I only seem to go to a Wetherspoon's when I am there to inspect them and this case was no different.

Today some grub and a couple of beers were on the menu.

First up, the beers

image.png

We always have to order one Corona.

image.png

Not exactly a pint I would order, but hey it is free so who am I to argue.

The second one is a choice and I plump for the plump glass and a Leffe.

image.png

I very nearly made an arse of it. The place was jumping, it was around 5pm on the Friday. We got the last table by the back door!

This was all fine and dandy and we got our food pretty damn quick

Grub ... Fish and Chips with ... mushy peas

image.png

My Verdict ... ☑️ Highly recommended!

The Leffe wins it in the battle of the beers.

At least you get a bit of a kick from the 6% ABV I think that it is.

image.png

The food was very good. Mushy peas were on point and the fish was just right.

The service let them down but that is another story lol!

Posting about a beer on a Saturday on the Beer Community ....

Cheers to beers and Happy Autumn everyone

I just came for the fish. Looks amazing
I'd even be willing to try the mushy peas. There has been a big push in the US lately for places to move back to beef tallow to cook their fries. Is it the same there? Drinking a festbier myself right now and smoking some turkey!

That whole beef tallow / seed oil thing is a your side of the Atlantic thing. I think the consensus is that it is better to do no frying, than worry about you are using.

Hehe the mushy peas are a must with fish and chips lol!

Yeah, not frying at all is probably the best move. We only air fry in our house!

That fish and chips looks amazing 😍 I like how you mixed the food with the little history of the pub, makes me feel like I was right there with you. The way you describe it, the Leffe definitely sounds like a stronger choice. Thank you for sharing a bit of Scotland with us 🍻

Hehe the fish and chips really were good. I like to give a little backdrop in posts, maybe for people after I have gone lol. Thank you for your kind words and feeling part of Scotland.

That's a beautiful view for a beer toast. Very calm and the natures vibe is so magical

I think this is the first time I've seen you eat fish! That looks good, although I don't eat fish because I'm allergic to it. The beers look good too. I can't wait to find out why the attention was so bad. A Saturday hug.🫂

jeje I love fish but rarely cook it at home. Fish and chips is a British institution and is my second favourite takeaway too! I never knew that you were allergic to it Nancy. The attention, well they are supposed to check up on us, they never did, nor did they say enjoy your meal etc. A non allergic hug Nancy

Spoons is a handy and cheap pop n in most places, but I personally wouldn't eat in one, but to be fair that does look like a good fish n chips plate.

hehe it's funny but it is not a place I would goto drink, I prefer a spit and sawdust pub that is for drinking not food. The food is cheap and cheerful, but I have to admit I have never eaten in a Spoons that hasn't been as a shop assignment.

You know, I hate fish and chips in the UK. They are never as good as Australian ones. I had this argument with Jamie when we first met. He simply could not believe they were better down under. He absolutely agrees with me on that now!

Saying that, it's different when you have them at a pub or out for tea over there - they're usually considerably better. But the mushy peas though - I'll never understand it...

Well coming from the Scottish coast where they land the fish, I will always be a Scottish east coast seaside fish and chippy fish and chips doused in vinegar and brown sauce lol. I have had my fair share south of the border that leave alot to be desired lol. Funnily enough the mushy peas for me is only when fish is ordered out like that...

But this for example ... delicious and a hop skip and a jump from where the fish was landed
