Cutting the winter heating for Wishful Wednesdays

Cutting the winter heating for Wishful Wednesdays

Ever since I was a boy I wanted to be a Chemical Engineer because the manager of the Flotta Oil refinery in Orkney where my father helped build was a Chemical Engineer.

A Chemical Engineer I became and into the Oil and Gas world I ventured and worked all over the world as a troubleshooter and more often than not in a war ravaged country.

With it came all the trappings that money brings you, I would not blink about hopping planes to go here there or anywhere, have bigger and faster gas guzzling cars.

However, Mrs T and I have over the years tried to make amends. We really do try and cut our carbon footprint.

In Covid time we sold the car and made the monumental decision not to buy another one when we came out of lockdown.

So this winter has been harsh, many cold days with wind.

We have also been trying to make a no buy January, so have not been buying anything not really needed.

Wanting to reduce heating

So one of the things we started was to cut down on our central heating use.

First thing is put warm clothes on.

Actually I have Ankylosing Spondylitus which is a bawbag of a disease I have had since I was 12.

I feel the cold.

An example when we lived in Spain, I would not remove my winter fleeced parka until June 15th the official start of summer. We lived in Andalucia so that was often in 30s then.

The idea

Firstly cut the thermostat temperature.

In the lead image of my thermostat taken at 11pm tonight just before I started writing this post, you can see the temperature is 18.4 degrees C.

I did read somewhere that he ideal temperature for a living room is around 19°C well ya beauty we are 0.6 degrees under that!

We often had a living room temp of 22 degrees and Mrs T would just be in a t-shirt while I am sitting in hoodie and scarf!

The wind really is what can get you, so around our front door we put up a curtain rod and a thick curtain cuts out cold coming in from that wind!

It works!

So when we really want to do something we can do it, sure there can be inconveniences, but fluff it the benefits outweigh the inconveniences....

For example:

  • We are using less gas hence less money!
  • We are fighting climate change!
  • We are reducing our carbon footprint

Gas central heating burns gas and of course that releases greenhouses into the atmosphere which are killing our planet.

So all in all we are working on making our wishful Wedneday coming true....

Are you doing something for wishful wednesdays?

This is as the title suggests a blog post about Wishful Wednesdays, which is a daily prompt theme from Free Compliments community, read about it here

We usually run our furnace lower than most people do anyway. I think on the average day it is around 67 or 68 in our house. Most people have theirs up over 70. I used to have some friends that worked for an oil company. It was called Lubrizol/CPI Engineering and they test samples from all over the world.
