British citizens to be trained for war with Russia

British citizens to be trained for war with Russia

The headline might appear fanciful, but it is not as far fetched as you may well realise.

Moving from a post-war to pre-war world

Grant Shapps the United Kingdom Defence Secretary said in a speech last week that we are "moving from a post-war to pre-war world". He further added that the UK must ensure its "entire defence ecosystem is ready" to defend its homeland.

This is not the first time over the years that this warning has been heard here in the UK. However the difference this time is the vastly undersized Armed Forces that we have.

British citizens should be "trained and equipped" to fight in a potential war with Russia.

General Sir Patrick Sanders is the outgoing Chief of the General Staff (CGS) , he is the head of the British Army. Well he was, he is being replaced as CGS in June by General Sir Roly Walker.

His sacking being replaced was announced by Downing Street after reports that he is being forced out as a direct response to his outspoken comments.

Coincidence? I think not!

Were they really outspoken comments or merely hard cold facts that needed to be told and more importantly need to be heeded?

The size of the British armed forces has been falling dramatically over the years, that is not outspoken it is plain old fact!

These comments come from Sir Patrick's speech at the International Armoured Vehicles conference in west London.

He said that on an urgent basis the UK must bring back the numbers in our army, up from a current 74,000 to a required 120,000 in three years!

This is also where he made the scaremongering comment ... "British citizens should be trained and equipped to fight in a potential war with Russia."

From a personal view point, the Russians have been rubbing their hands at the conflict in Gaza, it has taken all eyes off their war against Ukraine.

Indeed the quite often correct cynic in me thinks they had a hand to play in it all. Russia helping Iran helping hamas it's not as far fetched as you think.

The bottom line is that I agree with Sir Patrick when he added that Moscow and I think more than just Putin plan on "defeating our system and way of life".

It is a sombre and scary thought.

It was the Daily Telegraph that first aired or printed his comments and I am glad they did. source

Look at what is happening in the Nordic countries, Finland and Sweden for example. They are not being suckered by so called peace alliances in place.

The bottom line is that British men and women should be ready for a call-up to the armed forces if NATO goes to war with Vladimir Putin.

Downing says no to conscription

Sir Patrick warned us that we may be called up to defend our homeland.

However Downing Street has dismissed that, and have ruled out any move towards a conscription model.

They said that serving in the army would remain a voluntary thing.

Well duh, we are in an election year, of course they would say that!

But it is not just the number of troops that have been cut over the years, it is the whole amount of military spending, and this is what Sir Patrick has been a vocal critic of.

Did it do any good?

Well he is being replaced, so not done him any good!

I remember other European countries having national service. Britain abolished it before my time, I did and still do wonder why.

I agree with him in that our army is not enough, we need to have a trained and equipped citizen army.

Dad's army, who ever saw that show, what a sitcom that was. But the reality is we do need to be prepared.

Eastern and Northern Europe and national mobilisation

The closer you are to a threat then the more you feel it and the more likely you are to action.

Take Eastern and Northern Europe where the proximity to Russia is very close and what are they doing?

Yes they are laying the foundations for national mobilisation.

Going back to the events in Ukraine it shows that regular armies start wars; citizen armies win them.

We have not learnt from the July 1914 crisis

Our ancestors were warned but they did not heed the warnings of the July Crisis in 1914", where the series of diplomatic and military escalations led to the outbreak of the First World War.

We are not taking these escalations seriously.

We shall see what the future holds, but just look at what Putin and Russia have been doing this year in Ukraine.

Just like anything, whatever you see or hear must be subject to DYOR!

Great article!
I agree that we, as Europeans, should be more prepared for potential threats. I truely hope there won't be such a war but one does never know..

Thanks, obviously I hope nothing happens, but you never know. Many regimes are arming up and causing unrest now.

I think a lot of places have become a little laid back given the fact that we haven't had a real war in quite some time. It will be interesting to see what happens. I don't really like that word "equipped" though. Does that mean you folks get to start toting around guns? Good luck with that, it hasn't worked out the best over here!

Well it would not be like Israel when I was there. There they did their national service and were given a gun. Bloody bizarre in nightclubs instead of girls dancing round handbags it was dancing round uzi's and machine guns.
Would be like a reserve force like now but greatly expanded so all guns etc would be held at the bases.

That's crazy. I mean, I'm a gun owner, I think they are okay when used responsibly for hunting and stuff, but I don't deny there seems to be a correlation between the abundance of them here and the amount of violent crime.

It is knife crime here that has got out of control especially with teenagers. But yes if guns were legalised so to speak it would rocket.

a lot of concerns around the world, from financial crisis to assumed inevitable war. The story seems unending. As for Sir Patrick, he should know that round tables don't like those who speak something close to truth, not even talking of truth itself. Anyway, there is nothing wrong in voicing out, it's freedom.

Voicing can be hard to do, so it still takes guts as quite often you will be imprisoned or worse depending where you are...

it depends on which brings you peace of mind; keeping quiet to see an unfair system or voicing out to be unfair to the system..
