AI in election interference - A new Use Case?

We are all well aware that the emergence of scams and hackers only becomes more intensified whenever their is a bullrun in the markets.

The recent surge in the price of Bitcoin and most alts in the crypto markets was no different, we have seen a plethora of scammers and hackers been out in force.

Indeed the author encountered a wallet drainer trying to connect to his wallet.

Fake information is widespread so if you have not installed a wallet guard for your wallets then that should be a first priority! It save me.

What has been discovered is that as The United States is having a presidential election there has been an alarming spate of Fake AI-generated occurrences!

I am sure we can all remember the accusations about the Russian involvement in trying to influence the outcome of previous elections, well now there is Fake AI generated robocalls.

New Hampshire Primary Tuesday 23rd January

"This is not the first time that artificial intelligence technology has been used to mimic a politician and it will not be the last," an expert tells Sky News.

When I heard of this AI fake call I did not grasp the importance of it.

The New Hampshire state's attorney general's office is investigating the event from Sunday.

Although it seemed to happen on several occasions, more and more people are reporting the fake call.

A recorded message was sent to several voters on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's primary election.

What is a bit odd at first glance. well for me anyway is that Joe Biden is not campaigning in New Hampshire and his name will not appear on the primary ballot.

He has chosen that the first Democratic primary will be in South Carolina and that is not on Tuesday.

Apparently though his allies are running a campaign trying to get allies to write in his name on the slips.

The fake AI robocall

Quite simply the recorded message is a robocall that has used Artificial Intelligence to mimic the voice of the US President Joe Biden.

The call starts off with the US president's often used catchphrase: "What a bunch of malarkey."

The call then goes on to tell people that they should not vote in New Hampshire primary election on 23rd of January 2024..

The New Hampshire attorney general's office said it was investigating after the recorded message was sent to several voters on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's primary election.

After "What a bunch of malarkey." the voice which is similar to Biden's says: "It's important that you save your vote for the November election.

"Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again. Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday."

It is untrue that voting in the primary on Tuesday precludes voters from casting a ballot in November's general election.

While Mr Biden is not campaigning in New Hampshire and his name will not appear on the primary ballot - due to the president choosing South Carolina as the party's first official primary - his allies are running a campaign urging voters to write in his name.

These messages appear to be an unlawful attempt to disrupt the New Hampshire Presidential Primary Election and to suppress New Hampshire voters. New Hampshire voters should disregard the content of this message entirely. Voting in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary Election does not preclude a voter from additionally voting in the November General Election.

White House denials

Not surprisingly the White House has swiftly confirmed that Mr Biden did not record the spoof call.

It also said it highlights the challenges that emerging technologies such as the rapidly emerging Artifical Intelligence present, especially ahead of the November presidential election.

"The president has been clear that there are risks associated with deepfakes. Fake images and misinformation can be exacerbated by emerging technologies," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

AI in election interference - A new usecase?

In the statement quoted New Hampshire attorney general John Formella has said the recorded message appears to be an illegal attempt to disrupt and suppress voting, adding that voters "should disregard the contents of this message entirely".

We are all well aware of the simplicity with which AI can help in our daily lives. However malicious use is on the rise. It is bad enough that AI is taking human jobs but now could and indeed has quite easily interfered with human elections!

Here in the UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer abused party staffers posted on the first day of the Labour Party conference.

However it is alleged deepfake audio.

There are lots of elections that are already reporting of the use of Artificial Intelligence to spread fakes photos and texts, the list goes on and on in elections in Taiwan in Asia to Slovakia in Europe and now the US.

Just like anything, whatever you see or hear must be subject to DYOR!

AI continues to present its troubles. Every technology will always bite back when it falls to the wrong hands. Thanks for the update

That is the problem with technology. When it used for good then it is great and we all benefit when the bad actors use it then yeah it sucks!

Thanks for reading.
