The Earth Gave Back, Again.

The garden has been hitting us with good news and it’s exciting to see. This morning, we noticed our candy roaster squash glowing.

We have two fully ripe ones, dangling from the branch and one more slowly catching up, easing into its season.

That’s not all, we got another surprise. So of all the peppers my sister planted, we thought they were all the same while they were growing up. But she told me she had tried planting some scotch bonnet but wasn’t sure it would survive. Well, when we checked this morning, tucked beautifully among the leaves was the pepper we never truly expected to see fruit, scotch bonnet. Rare and fiery. Plus it is expensive in these parts as it’s one of those peppers that demands patience and special care, the kind you give without guarantees anyway. And there it was, one already ripe, wearing a bold, vibrant yellow. The others are still coming along, they look like they’re taking their time and honestly, we’re grateful for all of them.

One thing about scotch bonnet is that it has a way of transforming meals. Just a little, and the flavor deepens, and makes the entire recipe feel more alive. Knowing it came from our own soil makes that future meal feel even richer.

Still, the garden is asking for something now. The rains have been quiet, and the leaves are beginning to show it, drooping slightly, showing tiredness in a way that only living things get when they’ve been giving too much without being replenished. Soon, we’ll water deeply because we’re not expecting rain anytime soon.
