Book Review: The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine

This book is the kind of book that pulls you in quietly you just have to be a lil patient with it in the first few chapters but then on, towards the middle, it grips you and refuses to let go. It does starts off calm, almost harmless, but beneath that polished surface lies something sharp, really calculating, and very unsettling.

The story centers on Amber Patterson, a woman who wants more than her life currently offers. She desires more money, status and luxurious comfort. And she believes Daphne Parrish, wealthy, beautiful, and seemingly blessed with the perfect marriage, holds the key to everything she desires. What follows is a slow, deliberate infiltration of Daphne’s life, executed with chilling patience and precision.

At first, Amber appears sympathetic, hardworking, ambitious and determined to escape poverty. But as the story unfolds, her motivations darken. It is revealed that she isn’t just trying to improve her life; she’s willing to destroy someone else’s to get there. Watching her manipulate friendships, engineer chance encounters, and exploit vulnerabilities is both fascinating and uncomfortable. You know something is wrong, yet you can’t look away.

The novel is structured in parts, and I think that structure is one of its strongest assets. Right when you think you understand who the victim is and who the villain might be, the narrative shifts and forces you to reassess everything you thought you knew. Perspectives change, truths are revealed, and suddenly the story becomes far more complex than it initially appeared.

On the other hand, Daphne, who initially seems like the embodiment of privilege and perfection, turns out to be one of the most compelling characters in the book. Beneath her carefully curated image lies a woman trapped in a marriage far darker than anyone imagines. The author handles this transformation with care, allowing you to slowly piece together the reality behind the luxury.

What makes this book particularly effective is its exploration of power in all its stages including financial, emotional, and psychological. The novel examines how control can be disguised as love, how wealth can silence pain, and how easily appearances can deceive. It also asks uncomfortable questions about envy, ambition, and the lengths people will go to in order to feel secure or valued.

The pacing is deliberate rather than fast, but I guess it works nicely in the book’s favor. The tension builds steadily, and when the revelations come, they land with impact. The ending is satisfying, offering resolution without feeling overly clean or unrealistic.

In summary, the book is a psychological thriller that thrives on manipulation, misdirection and emotional depth. It’s not just about who wins or loses, but about how dangerous it can be to underestimate anyone especially the woman you think you understand the least.
