Language And Identity #LOH240
How many languages can you speak? And what language would you want to learn more than anything?
Language according to merriam webster dictionary means "the words, their pronunciation, and the methods of combining them used and understood by a community"
That being said, I'm from an English speaking country (Nigeria) funny enough, most times I feel geography is not fully taught in schools all over the world. Why am I saying this?,Since we are in a generation where technology has taken over the world, we tend to see how most persons think of certain geographical regions of the world in terms of language, for example as a Nigerian, if we speak English most set of person's will be like "how did you know how to speak this language fluently and most of all correctly".
Fully on the language's i speak
English language is my countries
Lingua franca, we speak English in our house holds while growing up. Nigeria as a country is multicultural, and there are over 520 thousand native languages, and am proud to say I speak both English, Epie and Nigerian Pidgin English.
- Epie (native dialect)
- English Language
- Nigerian Pidgin English
Epie my native dialect which is also known as mother tongue, is one of my proudest languages to speak, it's unique in it's way in that these native languages are spoken by a common community, that is to say each community or region within the country has a specific language they speak between them, to ease communication within a smaller circle.
English language is known as the general spoken language in the country, we speak and write it in schools, churches and markets, basically public places, when we meet persons from another community that is not familiar with our native dialect, we communicate with English.
Nigeria Pidgin English is also known as vernacular, is spoken widely throughout the country as it serves also as a Lingua franca bridging gap between different ethnic groups and communities. One thing about this language is that, it's not used in schools and the likes, and this is because it's not a formal language with written standard.
My Interest
I have always been fascinated by other languages, I actually took French as a borrowed course in my 100level to 200level when I was in the university, although we read just to pass because of the bulkiness of other courses, I was still able to pick one or two words from it, word like,
- "Au revoir"(Goodbye)
- "Merci"(Thank you)
- "Bonjour" (Hello)
- "Oui"(Yes)
And these are just tips of the iceberge I guess.
Apart from French, another language closest to my heart is Spanish, I really want to learn it with my whole heart, I don't know if it's too late though because there is just too many things going on (just doing grown up things)
Dora the Explorer the cartoon which i usually watch sometimes in nickelodeon made me love it the more.
So far so good these are my most interested Languages both spoken and just being loved.
All photos are mine
