Plant Stories: The Plant (Day 1/5)

I've been practicing digital drawing these days. It's fun, but it's quite challenging since I'm only using my phone. I'm up for the challenge, though.

Speaking of challenges, I stumbled upon Plant Stories: A 5-Day Secret Life of Plants Drawing Challenge hosted by @allyson19 in the Draw A Day community. The concept seems a lot of fun, so I decided to participate.

Having said that, this is my first entry to this challenge.

DAY 1: The Plant.

I like how we could continue the progress of this drawing each day by adding more features to it. It's simple yet fun! So, I'm excited to continue this challenge in the coming days. For now, let me show you the progress shots... or the layers I created for this work.

I already have some ideas in mind for the next few days of the challenge, so look forward to them. :)

Before I end this post, let me share a fun gif of this artwork. :)

Thanks for reading, and see you on the next one! (^^,)/

Jumping into Plant Stories using just your phone is bold. Growing the artwork layer by layer across the five days makes the whole thing feel like a little saga. Which app are you using, and do you go finger or stylus to keep the layers manageable? May your thumb survive the next prompts.

I'm using Medibang Paint app on my phone... I use my finger and this pen...

Nice, finger plus pen tag-team sounds fun. Medibang on the phone can be super clean if you tweak the stabilizer. Do you have a go-to brush or any custom settings you like, and do you color under your line art or use clipped layers? Excited to see how you build it up for day 2.

I posted my Day 2 earlier today... I'm still trying to figure out a lot of things... It's been fun trying out various brushes... I just created multiple layers, but I'm actually not sure what I'm doing. I'm just doing things by trial and error. hahaha
I haven't used the clipping function, I'll check it out next time. :) Thank you!

Trial and error is the best way to learn. In Medibang, Clipping makes a layer affect only the painted parts of the layer below, so you can add a clipped layer for shadows with Multiply and one for highlights with Add or Overlay, then tweak opacity till it feels right. If you want to keep it simple, turn on Protect Alpha to paint inside an existing layer without spills. Enjoy the brush hunt!
