Sometimes We Do Fine Art, Other Times We Swing Wrenches
Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!
Finally! After two weeks we've got the computer back!
I've a lot to say in this one and I don't really know where to start off, but let's see if I can wing it!
So, the thing is usually computers are throw away when they short out, mainly because they burn. So far with these we've been very very lucky to say the least. Now we don't fix the computers our selves, I think we all know why but that is not important now. We send them away to Johannesburg the central business hub of South Africa. There's an uncle there who fixed them up nicely and this time around we've got some improvement on the jobs (I'll cover that later on.)
Well it's as cold as it will ever be where I'm from and starting the day of with spanners and bolts just isn't my style, especially when it's freezing! After opening up the package I went to the kitchen and brewed myself a delicious cup of coffee, just to melt down a bit and get in the flow of things.
Luckily this isn't a hard job to do nor does it require an insane amount of labour. If anything it's more tedious than I would prefer.
The mechanical and hydraulic part of the megatronic has been sitting here for almost two weeks now, even though I did cover it up with some news papers dust still tends to get in everywhere and well as for the oil, oil never stops dripping...
So before I can mount the computer part of it I have to give this a thorough cleaning and while I'm busy double check if everything is indeed as it should be.
Working as clean as you can is always preferred.
No this is not some alien goo.
Although I won't mind calling it that from now on.
This, well this is a transmission builders dream substance! Why? Because you can splat that whole tube on something you want to stick without it having to ruin the viscosity or the properties of the oil that needs to go into the transmission.
All it is, is something to hold small parts in place while something is being assembled and when it heats up it melts away like it was never there in the first place.
The real name of it is, Assembly Goo. So it is in fact goo.
It doesn't just serve one purpose, well at-least not for us.
The way I was taught was to always oil or grease a seal or o-ring before fitting it into place or whatever the use case might be for it. Now this green goo also helps for that, it's less spilly (Meaning it doesn't drip like oil) and it's less messy than actual grease, more sticky though.
So I didn't get a photo of before I applied the goo but, everywhere that I applied goo is a rubber seal, what I do is add some goo to all of the rubber bits and when I bolt this computer into place it wont bite down and stand a chance of damaging the rubber seal. If the seal is not properly in place this will help it to slide into place and when the vehicle heats up to temperature it just vanishes.
Amazing right!
Now this little o-ring (I'm sure this is the smallest o-ring most of you have ever seen) but leave this little devil out and your in for a world of hurt (Maybe just a little regret)
Well I have to say it might not be the end of the world if you forget it, nothing will actually break inside or outside of the transmission BUT the oil you have to add to this megatronic is around (R500 ZAR) which is about ($27 USD) Now I know that's not a lot of money but it's money none the less and to top it off you'll have to remove it again and open it up again and then fit it back again. What will happen when that o-ring is forgotten is the oil from the megatronic will squirt into the transmission and well yeah that would be the end of it.
The hassles ey, oh and I've forgotten it once or twice. So it does in-fact happen.
After gently pushing the computer into place, it does take some force to get it to slide into the cracks that it has to. I always try to use a gentle force.
When it is in place I can now start to bolt it down, then the unit is completely sealed from within.
Keep in mind that this little devilish piece of hardware can handle well above 50 bars of pressure, that means double checking all of your seals is very much recommended before fitting this into place.
When bolting it down you don't want to torque that little bolt until it can't turn anymore, remember you are bolting down a computer! But you also don't want to just nip it, it has to be around 12-15 newton meters.
As bossman always says, this isn't always just about tightening and loosening bolts. Sometimes there's a fine art behind everything we do and trust me I've seen it.
Now, I love cleaning of any excess material when I'm done with a job.
Going the extra mile has always benefited me extremely so I do suggest everyone do the same, I doubt any of you will ever have to rebuild this component. What I mean is in the general things of life, always go further!
The next step would be to wipe of all of the excess assembly goo that I added, it really isn't necessary to do this but it'll make the end result look like something one can be proud of.
Never mind the mess on the workbench and by the way the coffee was damn great!
Don't forget the oil! It's the one thing that is forgotten the most in a workshop, the oil.
These megatronics don't take that much oil anywhere between 800ml and a 1000ml would do just fine, although not more than a liter.
I do say that it doesn't take up a lot of oil, but that oil is quite a few pennies hey! Almost 30 USD to the liter!
Most people would say, "Nah ATF oil would work just as good" and they say that because this oil does have ATF properties (Automatic Transmission Fluid - ATF) but don't, just don't try to pour in ATF or any other oil for that matter it will NOT work.
How do I know?
Well fuck Bob, I've tried it. 🤣
With that said, again it's not the end of the world if you do in-fact use the wrong oil. But I would recommend opening it up and cleaning it out properly afterwards.
Well...
There we go, she's all done for!
Got her filled with oil, cleaned her off nicely and made her shiny and then I fitted her back into the vehicle!
After that, she drove like brand spanking new from the factory!

Nice work and great photographs brother!
One thing I remember during my time as a diesel mechanic, was all the cool colors of different lubricants and other petroleum based products.
Do you use the soap with the sand in it to scrub your hands afterwards? I remember these big orange bottles called Gojo or something like that. It worked really good.
Laughs, strange how we find a liking in the colours😂 we have genuine nissan oil over here that is as blue as anything you've ever seen.. Like deep sea blue...
Then we've got this jelly like oil, very thick VERY and that is almost like a lime green.
Yeahp we got some lemon scented hand scrub, so after a wash I smell like lemons 😂🍋 I do like that
HiveMotors is a new tag for me;)
can I tell here about our 3D-printing business?
Hello friend, this job really requires a lot of patience and dedication, as Bossman says: it is not always just about tightening and loosening screws, that's right, hey, a phrase that I liked is that sometimes there is an art behind everything what we do, this is true, for things to turn out well we must do them with care, good job, greetings.
Definitely a lot of care and ironically enough people in our trade don't generally have a lot of that. I've seen some funny stuff in my short time as a technician 😂
Thanks for stopping by, I've been slacking on my technical posts lately but I'm getting back in there!!
