Making One Of Two Equals Not Possible.

Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!

The Client's Request.

Okay so this is more of a favour than a request really, we sent some work to the client, some basic wiring work on a LR Discovery, then in turn they sent us this. Which I think might be a favour for a favour. However this is not as easy as it looks.

The idea on paper sounds nice, "Making One Of Two" but this is not as simple as it might look, sure if all the components are in good order it's doable but this I have so much doubt in.

Let's Run Through The Visual Problems.

Oh and there are a lot! A lot I see on this one transmission that was fitted into a truck with hopes and dreams of it driving smoothly!

Firstly, this is not acceptable, that insert on the converter is absolutely hammered, no way that'll go in straight!

Too Much Silicone... Everywhere!

This is one thing I absolutely hate! I mean hate and despise! Is silicone!

Myself personally have never used even a drop of silicone on a 6R80 Transmission ever in my life! Nor will I ever!

An Oil Change???

Well they did an oil change on this for some or other reason?

Okay fair to say that they did try to do a rebuild on this transmission... But just adding new oil will do absolutely nothing!

A rubber sealing gasket? Now this is something I have never seen on these transmissions before! Where in the world did they get this even?

These usually have aluminum gaskets! That are wait for it.... Reusable!

Different Maker?

Now this is questionable at best! I mean this is getting worse and worse!

This is not the valve body of this vehicle! Heck not even the same car makers!
Sure they look very very similar and can bolt down on the same transmission casings.

This valve body is used in BMW's and I'm pretty sure a sports car has very different values than a pickup truck!

Every Seal Has Silicone!

This is really the worst! So many reusable parts that I need to break to remove!

Dang this seems more like work than a favour to me right?
What kind of tech built this transmission?

This is not as big of a problem, but they only need 3 oil feed pipes. After all the fourth is blocked off as you can visually see.

This is more of a problem than it looks! They completely removed the thermostat from the transmission! Now that doesn't just open up when the temp gets high, it also acts as something that gives oil pressure inside the transmission.

Sounds silly but yeah it is true!

So removing that would also give you slippage problems and oil pressure loss problems!

The Biggest Problem!

Well truthfully one of the big problems!

Now let's just say that the rest of the transmission was in near perfect condition! That would not even have helped because the splines on the planetry gear are all twisted off! This transmission would legitly be going nowhere! Okay it will have gear 1,2 and 3 but 4,5 and 6 will be non existing!

Some expensive metal there!

Stack Not Even Clutching!

Yeah not a lot to say here other than that spacing is way off! That clutches will never bind up and bite and take off!

They will just slip till forever ends!

20260121_114308.jpg

Some are already partially burned up and some are not even the same damn clutch frictions!

This looks queer at best!

20260121_114428.jpg

Well There Is Your Mess Sir!

Now I can't do much with this as it stands!

I still have some tear down work to do and that is where the real money is at! Safe to say those really expensive parts will also be buggered up real good!

Especially with the rest of the stuff looks as bad as it does!

20260121_114722.jpg

The Oil Pump!

Well yeah! It looks like this oil pump was pumping sand as well!

That would have ended in a major catastrophy aswell!

20260121_122211.jpg

The pump gear that fits into the torque converter is also the wrong way around!

I mean these transmissions have been on the market for more than 13 years now! I'm sure there are a lot on google and youtube you can check up on! These errors are stupid!

20260121_122321.jpg

The pump housing is also starting to wear out!
Using this for much longer will also lead to a massive failure!

20260121_122328.jpg

Last but not least even the output shaft seal is whacked up.

These things boggle my mind beyond anything I have ever experienced!

I can't do much with this at all!

Take note this is not a how to guide, merely myself talking about the work I do and my thoughts around certain things.

To everyone who made it this far into my post Thank you for the read and the support.
