Seven Years of Service: A Heartfelt Celebration of Teaching in Buhawen Elementary School

Seven years ago, I embarked on a journey that would shape my career and soul.

I became a teacher at Buhawen Elementary School, a humble and far-flung institution nestled in the heart of the mountains, where the Aeta community thrives with resilience, humility, and grace.

Today, I celebrate the passing of time and the immeasurable experiences, growth, and lessons that have filled each day of those seven meaningful years.

When I first set foot in Buhawen, I was a mix of emotions—nervous yet excited, unsure yet determined. The road to the school was unpaved, the classrooms modest, and the resources limited. But I was greeted by warm smiles, curious eyes, and the purest expressions of gratitude from children who had so little yet offered so much in return. Though remote, my heart knew then that this place would be where I would plant the seeds of knowledge, patience, and love.

The Aeta students became more than pupils; they became my inspiration. Many walked kilometres under the sun or through muddy paths to attend school. Some came barefoot, carrying simple bags filled with pencils and notebooks worn from use yet filled with dreams that sparkled brighter than gold. Their dedication to learning despite poverty and distance reminded me every day why I chose to become a teacher.

In these seven years, I have taught more than just math, reading, or science lessons. I’ve taught resilience, kindness, hope, and faith in oneself. But more importantly, I’ve learned far more from my students than I could ever teach them. They taught me that happiness does not depend on material things and that joy can be found in simple moments—a shared lunch, a drawing proudly handed to me, or a giggle that breaks the stillness of a hot afternoon class.

I remember the first time one of my students wrote their name for the first time. The pride in their eyes was indescribable. Or the time we celebrated Buwan ng Wika with handmade costumes from banana leaves and recycled sacks. Each of those memories is stitched into the fabric of my heart.

Teaching in a far-flung school is not easy. There were days when the rain poured so hard that the path to school turned into a slippery river. Sometimes, we had to improvise lesson plans because there was no electricity or when materials didn’t arrive. There were moments when I felt tired, physically and emotionally, wondering if I was making a difference. But every “Ma’am, thank you,” every hug, and every effort from my students reminded me that yes, I was.

Celebrating my seventh year feels like looking back on a beautiful, imperfect, but incredibly rewarding tapestry. I see the faces of children who have grown under my care—some now in high school, some still with me, and some whom I may not see again but will never forget. I see the transformation not just in them but in myself. I have become more patient, understanding, and deeply rooted in the true mission of teaching: to touch lives and build dreams, no matter the setting.

This anniversary is not just mine. It is a celebration for my students, who never gave up despite the odds.It is a celebration for the community of Buhawen, who embraced me as one of their own and reminded me that love and belonging are the true riches of this profession.

It is a celebration for all the teachers in remote areas who continue to teach passionately, even when recognition is scarce and support is limited.

Looking ahead, I know the journey is far from over. There will be more challenges, tears, victories, and laughter. My mission remains clear: to continue being a light in this small mountain school, to nurture minds and hearts, and to remind every child that their background does not define their future.

To my fellow educators—especially those in remote schools—never underestimate your impact. Your presence, your effort, and your love ripple through generations. And to my students, past and present, thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. You have changed me in the most beautiful ways.

As I celebrate this 7th anniversary, I do so with a whole heart, grateful spirit, and an even stronger commitment to serve. Buhawen Elementary School may be far from the city, but I have found purpose, joy, and a sense of home in its silence and simplicity.

Here’s to many more years of teaching, learning, and growing—together.
