The Swing Bridge Between New Bedford and Fairhaven
The Swing Bridge Between New Bedford and Fairhaven
With the nicer weather I have been getting out for morning walks, and a couple of times I have visited Popes island, which is between New Bedford and Fairhaven, and when there I always have to get shots of the swing truss bridge

Lets talk a little about the bridge
The bridge is actually one of three bridges crossing the Acushnet River between the two communities. The entire four lane stretch carries U.S. Route 6 traffic. A short, 500-foot-long (150 m) span crosses between the mainland of New Bedford just west of McArthur Drive to Fish Island, the smaller western island in the river. From there, after a 0.1-mile (0.16 km) stretch of highway connects the two spans, the main New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge crosses from Fish Island to Pope's Island.
This span includes the main span
Which is the focus of this post and is the focus on this post is the Swing Truss Bridge and it was built between 1897 and 1899 and includes a 283.2 foot long swing truss it opens for boats to pass about 5000 times a year apprently and with its age is getting a challenge to maintain and a plan is in place to replace it with a lift bridge, but while its still there I will be getting photos of it
Once on Pope's Island, another 0.4-mile (0.64 km) stretch of highway connects to the third and longest span, a low, 0.2-mile (0.32 km) trestle bridge between Pope's Island and the town of Fairhaven, with the town line falling on the bridge. The entire stretch is just over 1 mile (1.6 km) between the two shores

Have a great day
It looks like a really cool bridge. Hopefully they haven't started charging tolls to go over it like the bridges near where I live. It's a big thing right now...
No tolls on this one, but I have heard if they replace it as they are planning Tolls may come into effect
Good luck with that! It has been a disaster here. Lawsuits and everything!
fingers crossed they dont go wityh that option
This is one of the benefits of a walk at dawn, great tones and amazing spot on the bridge! Nice shots @tattoodjay friend, as usual :)

That bridge reminds me of the bridge that marks the end of my hometown. Sometimes the world seems so small, doesn't it?!
OHh yes so big in some ways but so small in others
Exactly!
What a beautiful shot of the swing truss bridge. It's incredible that you're documenting this piece of engineering before it's eventually replaced. Keep up the great work!
Thanks kindly your support is appreciated
for me it will be a shame when it is gone
Have a great day
This bridge is beautiful I can only imagine the engineering and architecture put to bring it to life. With the sunrise view it makes it breathe taking.. shots nicely taken

What a cool and historic bridge, but a lift bridge makes more since which means that's what they'll replace it with down the line. Great shots you captured, good job!
Yes the lift bridge makes good sense but I will miss this one I have to admit it has such a charm to it
