Merchant Marine Memorial Walkway
Merchant Marine Memorial Walkway
Good Morning, I hope life is treating you well
Today I will share a few shots of what I always call the Pier at Fort Taber, but as I was preparign this post I remember a sign by the pier you can walk out on, where it is called the Merchant Marine Memorial Walkway, and from what I understand now this pier is the walkway and beside it is a memorial stone and flag poles to honor the Merchant marines who gave their life in service
Of the 215000 merchant mariners who served in World War II 8651 or 1 in every 25 -- died. From Massachusetts 468 merchant mariners died including 30 from New Bedford.
The Marine Corps suffered the next greatest percentage of losses. They sent 669108 to fight in World War II and lost 19733 or 1 in 34.
Those mubers did shock me, I knew many dies but didnt know the numbers where that high
That all said for this post I am not sharing shots on the walkway, but shots taken from on the beajh looking at the pier/walkways on different days last year.
I have to admit now when I visit this spot again and look at thei walkway whether fromt he beach as I share here, or on it, I will look at it differently and say a quiet prayer and thank all those who gave their life and are honoured by the memorial and walkway
I decided to start with this shot during the blue hour a more sombre sort of look which seems fitting for this now

Such beautiful captures... Nothing like the morning blue and the sunrise! World War 2 was a very heavy casualty war, one of the worst. Many younger people today don't realize it was only 80 years ago, and the sacrifices made were huge in blood and money. I know we appreciate that, but our grandparents were the one's who fought and I heard all about it firsthand...
War is ugly... I'm glad they made a beautiful walkway as a memorial. It would be nice if more people remembered though!

yes the younger generation just cannot grasp the scale of loss from WW2, not sure what they teach in history these days
Have a great day
