Tik Tok the Witch is Dead?

I don't think this will come as any surprise, but I dislike Tik Tok.

It has always amused me a bit when I say that something is near valueless, and the response is about how much money the company is worth. Plenty of companies are worth a lot, but don't do much good for humanity. Most of Wall Street fit into this category. But, it is interesting with the ByteDance owned Tik Tok in the US, because essentially it is going to get banned for the ambiguous reason of "national security", even though what it does is no more, and maybe less intrusive than Facebook and Twitter.

image.png

But it is an interesting case from a user perspective, because there are plenty of "content" creators on the platform that are making significant amounts of money from it from the US. What this means is that essentially all of their hard work selling their bodies and souls over the last however many years, accounts for nothing. Sure, they can go to another platform like YouTube shorts or other alternatives, but the follower list that they have developed, doesn't follow.

They are starting from scratch.

From a platform perspective, they love to have this situation so that users once invested, have little desire to leave organically. They are beholden to the platform, and the platform's advertisers, because that is how they are so "valuable". users are shackled, imprisoned, slaves. They can't run, because to do so, will mean that they will lose their income. The ad revenue model is highly lucrative for the platforms, lucrative for a fraction of the creators, and extractive and abusive of the rest.

Not only this, the content creators don't own anything, have zero say, and can do nothing if the platform or in this case the government says, no more. It is actually quite incredible that the US government is making this move, but then, it is all about money again, isn't it? Why should all that "value" of 170 million users be extracted from the country to China, when it can be hijacked by US-based companies instead?

They don't care about the current users, because they know that those users will be forced to do what they are told, and even if a content creator is left destitute, there are plenty more who will replace them. The creator space is filled with people looking to do whatever it takes so they don't have to get a real job. I get it, real jobs suck. People talk about "wage slavery" but what is it called for the earning creators on Tik Tok if their work is not only not theirs, but is just cut off at the whim of some old people in government?

Own you fools, Own!

It is fucking ridiculous that in this day and age, with all these young people who talk about how tech savvy they are and how they are raised as digital natives, calling out "ok boomer!" to people like me (not a boomer by a long way), that they are so useless that they are relying on the platforms that are what.... owned by the boomers!

Rather than jumping on the latest tech, rather than decentralising through these online communities that they value so much, rather than building what works for them, outside of the system that they think doesn't, rather than owning - they keep on renting instead. Because they are far less creative and far less risk seeking than they believe themselves to be. And, far less willing to take on responsibility for themselves.

They will inherit trillions, but don't want to own.

Fucking idiots.

So, rather than starting to build the decentralised systems that they can all invest their time, effort, and inheritances into in the future so that they own their experience and can't get cancelled by corporations or governments, they throw their hands up in the air, take to the streets, and complain to their government screaming, it isn't fair, give my toys back!

I don't know what will happen with Tik Tok in the supreme court in the US, but the witch isn't dead, because the governments that control every aspect of our lives, whether we need them to or not, lives on. We keep feeding them grapes, and fanning their lard asses, while they make decisions that benefit them, and harm us.

They need a bucket of water thrown over them.

I'm melting....

There is a lot of money and power involved. Tik Tok has a lot of followers. I don't think they can touch it and if they do, there are always other ways to break the rules. I don't like Tik Tok either, mainly because I feel it is a platform with a lot of garbage, that doesn't contribute anything, but I can't deny that it has entered millions of homes in the world and that going against that, can have a very high cost, especially in this era of global communications and freedoms of expression. Greetings

Yet, just think of the millions of hours of life spent there, every hour.

You're right, it's no surprise, I also dislike TikTok. The whole situation is a mess. It started as a platform for fun, like that little girl dancing back in 2020, but now it's this giant, manipulative thing.

Creators are trapped. They pour their souls into building audiences, only to have it all disappear if the government decides to pull the plug. It's like their work doesn't even belong to them. And the worst part? They're so reliant on these platforms, they're scared to leave.

It's like these young people, always talking about how tech-savvy they are, they're actually the most helpless. They're renting their success instead of building something truly theirs. They keep chasing the next trend, the next viral video, instead of creating something meaningful and independent.

It's a real shame. They have the potential to build amazing things (somewhere else), but they're too busy chasing fleeting fame and letting corporations control their destiny.

It's like their work doesn't even belong to them.

It doesn't belong to them. "Not your keys, not your crypto" is the saying. Similar for accounts and content on the platforms.

You're right, 'Not your keys, not your crypto' is a solid rule. It applies to accounts and content on platforms too. Basically, if you don't own the underlying technology, you don't truly own your data or creations. That's why I'm exploring Hive this year – it's a decentralized platform that puts control back in the hands of the creators.

I tried using tiktok to promote my guitars and found myself disgusted with 90% of the content there...

Maybe I'm getting old, but I feel like if its goes away it will improve the mental health of the youth.

Short-form content is a scourge on mental health. Not because of it being short, or even the content perhaps - but just the continuous stream of it that offers no depth, but keeps people scrolling.

All of this web2 social platforms are doing the same thing of extracting people's information but Uncle Sam do not like when it is another country that is doing the extracting. Funny thing is that, many people are starting to switch red note which is another Chinese app maybe to start rebuilding their audience.

Yeah, I heard of REDnote recently - screw that. Jumping from one platform to another is not the answer.

It's not and they are jumping board on another platform that will likely get the same treatment as Tiktok. Hive will be a much better option but no one owns it making marketing difficult.

The sad thing is l, most people are just jumping ship from one legacy platform to another. This whole red tag or whatever it is called is apparently the next big thing. I remember a while ago my wife's cousin said that the Chinese created tik Tok or musically back then to see how many stupid things they could get Americans to do and make fun of them.

Definitely not going to work. People are fools - they love to keep banging their heads on the wall.

to see how many stupid things they could get Americans to do and make fun of them.

I think this is something the rest of the world feeds off - Ever since I was a kid there was the saying, "Only in America". Many silly things, like "this bag is not a toy" - but now with global information flow at speed, America spreads everywhere.

Ah yes, we have many of those signs and you just have to sit and think that someone had to try it at least once for them to realize they needed to make a sign for it!

The big question is how can we inspire them to come over and try building in here, a legacy no one can snatch...

Seems they don't want to. With all their tech savvy, you'd think they would give it a go, but they are unwilling. They want everything provided to them. The infra, the audience, the ad revenue.

They don't follow others as they know what TikTok is for. They think they can find unlimited interesting (actually stupid) videos there. TikTok is also a matter of society, a potential danger for moral values.

There is a saying that goes, "Every product has a buyer." No matter how much we don't like TikTok, there is a segment that uses it intensively. These are mostly people who don't know how to act in total.

I haven't used TikTok and I don't plan on start using it.

But I feel like TikTok is not the problem, it's more about how people are behaving on the internet and in real life for the internet nowadays. I see TikTok as merely the net that is displaying the different spectrum ends of human behaviours on social media.

TikTok is not - They all are. People are. We have created such a twisted culture these days.

Hey there, the Bilpcoin team just wanted to give you a virtual high-five we manually curated this post.

Their attempts to intimidate and silence their critics are equally concerning. The use of downvotes as a means of censorship is a clear indication of their desperation to maintain their grip on the narrative. But it's not working

A Call to Action Against Downvote Abuse on Hive

Bad downvotes on Hive are a growing concern that must be addressed. These downvotes not only discourage users from sharing their real thoughts and ideas but also damage the community as a whole, we see many walk away

The Buildawhale farm scam has been a topic of concern for us, and we've exposed it. However, despite our attempts to bring attention to this issue, it seems that no concrete actions have been taken to address it. This lack of response is puzzling

Let's discuss a more serious issue that affects all on Hive. The prevalence of bad downvotes on Hive is a major concern, and we urge you to speak up if you've been affected by it. Don't be afraid to share your experiences speak up
