Without Conviction

According to traditional definition, conviction is a firmly held belief or opinion, often associated with unwavering faith, steadfast dedication, or an unshakeable stance on a particular issue.

In today's rapidly evolving world, I see conviction more as a quality that has become more incarnated given all the things that are happening around us currently.

I think these "unusual experiences" like global pandemics, political upheavals, and technological revolutions, have triggered our inner conviction muscle to wake up and start becoming functional in ways we never anticipated.

The unusual aspect of these experiences may partly stem from the fact that they challenge our previously held beliefs about how the world works.

Is Reality Becoming More Fluid?

For one, they force us to confront realities that we may have never considered possible, pushing us to reevaluate our convictions and perhaps, adapt to new paradigms(or not).

In recent years, we've witnessed events that seem to defy logic and reason. For me, it's mostly the spread of misinformation at unprecedented speeds that changes the collective opinion on topics almost overnight.

Also, the rise of artificial intelligence and its aspect of mimicking human creativity has blurred the lines between human and machine capabilities.

AI-generated art, music, and even written content are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from human-created works, pushing us to deeply ponder about human uniqueness and creativity.

Another example of experiences that seem to defy logic is the financial markets.

In my view, there's an apparent disconnect between economic fundamentals and market behavior. Meme stocks skyrocket, cryptocurrencies fluctuate wildly based on tweets, and traditional valuation models seemingly lose relevance.

An unbridled volatility challenges our convictions about financial security and the nature of value itself.

These seemingly crazy, absurd, and non-sensical occurrences have thrust conviction into the spotlight of our collective consciousness. Something that's more talked about or tapped into, consciously or subconsciously.

Push And Pull Conviction

On one hand, these unusual times have sparked a renewed sense of conviction in many. People are standing up for causes they believe in, fighting for justice, and working towards a better future with renewed vigor, refusing to let the establishment dictate their beliefs or actions.

There's a darker side to this awakening of conviction. For some, the overwhelming nature of current events has led them to brush against the abyss of despair. Which is quite understandable.

When the world no longer makes sense according to our previous understanding, it's easy to lose internal control, nothing to hold onto. Sometimes, the outward experiences can become so overwhelming that they seem to erode our sense of self and purpose.

In a way, it's a dichotomy that presents an interesting challenge: How do we maintain conviction in a world that seems to constantly undermine our beliefs? How do we stay grounded when the ground itself seems to be shifting beneath our feet?

Well, I personally don't know the answer at this point in time. Hence, the title; Without Conviction.

A Dynamic Reality

Perhaps, it could be redefining conviction itself, we might view conviction as a dynamic quality - one that allows us to hold firm to our core values while remaining flexible enough to adapt to new information and experiences.

In this light, conviction becomes more about being open to having the courage to question our own beliefs, the strength to change our minds when presented with compelling evidence, and the resilience to keep moving forward even when uncertainty abounds.

Cultivating this new form of conviction may be our best defense against both blind adherence to outdated ideas and the paralyzing fear of a world in flux.

But it can be really hard to engage with the complexity of our current reality without losing our sense of self or purpose if we don't have any core conviction that we adhere to.

This is where personal introspection becomes handy. We need to identify our fundamental values - those principles that define who we are at our core - and use them as an anchor in these turbulent times.
