Unknown Journeys

Eventually, you'll get there.
Wherever you're going, as far as you keep going and don't let the noise stay in your head while also remaining open to the path redefining itself.

Rocket science is when you take something simple and make it complex, because you're banking on the average modern person not having the patience to understand the elegant simplicity underneath all those equations.

An unknown characteristic of the average modern person is their simultaneous craving for complexity in entertainment yet demand for simplicity in explanation.

As much as I'm fascinated by rockets, I think the science of it is really just applied common sense dressed up in mathematical clothing.

It's still just throwing something really hard in a specific direction.

At a basic level, everything can be viewed as a vehicle, even the body itself, that's designed for a specific set of task(s) and operates within certain defined parameters.

A spoon is a vehicle for conveying food. A computer, for processing information and a planet, for sustaining life.

The word "system" often implies a rather complex mechanism.

But if you remind yourself of the popular belief that life evolved from a single cell, then every system is just that original cell having learned new tricks over billions of years.

You can find the timestamp and work back your way into understanding that complexity is just simplicity that got really good at hiding its origins.

I admit that this borderline proves the point that we're all just sophisticated bacteria pretending to understand the universe.

But the non-obvious point here is that maybe the bacteria were onto something we've forgotten in all our complexity-building.

I think evolution from a broader scale is more of a mystery than we're comfortable admitting.

Sure, we can trace DNA and fossil records, but the leap from chemistry to consciousness still feels like magic to me.

Besides, there are a lot of holes on the timestamp of human development when viewed linearly from single-celled organisms to beings capable of contemplating their own existence.

Driver's Seat

Where we're collectively headed towards isn't as varied as the stars in the sky, at least that's a comforting thought, even if it might not be true.

Despite billions of individual lives, our trajectories seem to converge onto a surprisingly narrow set of predefined futures.

But you also have to wonder is it because the majority has being grouped into a few large organizations or because genuine individual thought is harder to maintain when you're swimming in everyone else's information streams?

I really can't tell for sure at this point in time.

The "rocket science" of modern society, be its economic models, political structures, technological pathways, etc, has become so complex that only a perceived few can claim to understand its controls, leaving the rest of us at the backseat as mere passengers.

Not much love for large organizations but I do understand how they emerge naturally when individual humans try to accomplish things bigger than themselves.

The challenge is keeping the human-scale wisdom alive inside the organizational machinery that seems to be devoid of any memory of why it was created in the first place.

Getting there eventually comes with accepting that the destination could change while you're walking towards it.

And it is possible to navigate between being a passenger and taking the wheel, even if you can't always see where the road leads.
