The Power Of Contribution

avatar

Isn't it joyful, fulfilling, even empowering to contribute to something bigger than yourself? The impact it creates, the potential change it could bring about, and the sense of agency it fosters – these are just some of the reasons why contribution seems intrinsically valuable to me.

In a previous post, I explored the journey from participation to contribution in the context of digital spaces.

Participation is a crucial initial step, but passively consuming content without contributing limits our impact and can lead to several drawbacks.

The Drawbacks of Passivity

Firstly, passive participation often confines one to the superficial layers of this digital space, like only getting to know information on a surface level.

An example could be when we are surrounded by content that reinforces our existing beliefs, we miss out on exposure to diverse perspectives that could challenge and ultimately strengthen our own viewpoints.

The second thing is a lack of contribution can lead to a feeling of disconnect or lack of agency.

From personal experience, scrolling endlessly through feeds always feels like watching the world go by without being a part of it.

Which can be detrimental to one's mental or emotional health, as if missing out on the opportunity to shape one's surroundings.

In contrast, contributing greatly reduces this effect.

The point of the matter is that by solely consuming content, you miss valuable opportunities for learning and growth.

The act of contributing, whether it's crafting a thoughtful comment, as in sharing your unique perspective, or building something new, requires you to process information, develop your ideas, and potentially even learn new skills. It's an active process of knowledge creation.

Unique Skills, Ideas And Perspective

A software developer can contribute by creating open-source code that benefits the entire developer community. A writer can contribute by sharing their expertise on a specific topic through blog posts or articles.

Even a casual user with good photography skills can contribute by sharing high-quality images that enhance online communities.

Someone with a unique cultural background can share their perspective on current events, fostering a more inclusive online space.

Similarly, users with a contrarian viewpoint can challenge the status quo and lead to a more nuanced understanding of complex issues.

This unique blend of skills, ideas and perspectives creates and fosters a collective intelligence that is greater than the sum of its parts.

In many ways, this collective intelligence allows online communities to solve complex problems, generate innovative ideas, and continuously evolve the digital landscape.

In some ways, Wikipedia is a prime example of collective intelligence. A large number of users contribute their knowledge to create a vast and reliable source of information.

Online forums like Reddit and discussion boards function similarly, where the collective knowledge of participants surpasses what any individual could know.

Why Contribute?

The sum of user contributions is far greater than the individual parts. Every contribution, big or small, adds to the collective knowledge base and fosters a richer, and more dynamic online experience for everyone.

I personally would like to highlight increased knowledge and skill development as a tangible beneficial aspect of contribution.

I've expanded my knowledge on things that interest me and this has also led me to acquire and develop skills I thought I couldn't have before. Both were primarily based on the contributions of other individuals.

Why contribute? Because you have the power to make a difference.

Absolutely! Funny thing about this decentralized world we are building... Everyone is free to contribute as much or as little as they want, but being a decentralized world/ecosystem, everyone's contribution helps (and doesn't need anyone's approval). And being a stakeholder, one contributes to their well-being by contributing in some way to the ecosystem.

Right. That's another thing I love about contribution in a decentralized ecosystem. We don't need any permission to contribute, and this opens up a certain diversity with regards to the workings of it. I think this dual beneficial relationship between the contributor and the ecosystem is a very appealing aspect of decentralized systems.

Thanks for stopping by :)
