Descending Onto A Plateau
If I'm being critical, experiencing a plateau is more of a "why" problem than a "how" problem.
I think it's often too easy to jump straight into solving for how to get out of a plateau because the feedback loop from ideation to execution is shorter and faster than addressing the underlying causes.
New techniques, different approaches, or increased effort are "how" solutions that give immediate action and visible progress.
The not easy part is intentionally (or not) missing the mark because we'll rather treat the symptom than the cause.
Suppose I experience a writer's block, the words stop flowing and my first instinct is to seek tactical remedies.
Maybe look for writing prompts, read more, changed environments, different times of day to write, etc.
If it feels really serious, I could as well browse articles with titles like "10 Ways to Overcome Writer's Block" or "The Ultimate Guide to Reigniting Your Creative Spark."
The goal is to implement as many suggestions as I can desperately hoping one will break the dam.
How often do these techniques provide lasting relief?
Of course, they rarely do. I might solve today's block but not the pattern that creates tomorrow's.
Generally, they'll generate a temporary burst of productivity, but soon enough, I'll find ourselves back in the same stagnant waters.
Identity-level Reckonings
This happens because I've neglected to ask the more fundamental "why" questions.
- Why has my writing reached this impasse?
- Why does this particular project no longer energize me?
- Why am I resistant to the next step in this work?
- Why have I lost sight of the purpose behind my writing?
Needless to say, it requires a deeper, more uncomfortable form of introspection to answer such questions, revealing truths I'd rather not face. That my fear—not my technique—is the real obstacle? That what I'm writing no longer aligns with who I'm becoming?
The "why" questions are harder to answer because they tend to lead to identity-level reckonings.
The plateau isn't a temporary technical challenge but a signal that something fundamental needs to change, in our approach, our goals, or even our self-conception.
This is precisely why we avoid them, intentionally.
"How" questions keep us safely within the parameters of our existing paradigm.
"Why" questions threaten to upend it entirely.
Experientially, when you're stuck on a stubborn plateau, tactical "how" solutions may offer temporary relief, but sustainable progress demands that you first confront the more existential "why" questions—even when they lead to answers you aren't prepared to hear.
Necessary Synthesis
If I'm being dialectical, as in viewing progress as an ongoing conversation between opposing forces rather than a linear path, plateaus aren't really problems to be solved, they're more so necessary phases in the growth of whatever process we're trying to be great at.
Consider again the writer facing a block.
A dialectical view would reframe this experience as a productive tension between thesis and antithesis:
- what has been written and what seeks to emerge.
- between old ideas and new insights struggling to take form.
The plateau, in this light, is a gestation period where seemingly contradictory elements are working toward integration;
- The skills you've mastered (thesis) meet the limitations of those skills (antithesis), creating the conditions for a new level of mastery (synthesis).
The first time I came across this concept via Hegel's philosophical framework, it resonated with what I was experiencing at that time, given I hadn't been able to progress in my writing despite trying every tactical solution in the book.
Also, discomfort itself can be generative in this context.
Any anxiety, frustration, uncertainty and doubt that accompany plateaus aren't merely psychological barriers but also energetic forces creating the pressure needed for transformation.
Given that plateaus serve this developmental purpose, the tactical "how" solutions like writing prompts or changing environments mentioned above may sometimes be appropriate.
But now, they're not viewed as escape routes from the plateau but as tools for consciously participating in the dialectical process rather than resisting it.
