Princess Mononoke is, for me, a cinematic classic of Japanese culture. It conceives the idea of the constant struggle between civilization and nature. On one hand, we have Lady Eboni, who represents the "villain" of the story, while on the other, we have a girl raised by wolves, better known as Princess Mononoke, who represents the story's heroine. Then we have Ashitaka, a young prince who, while defending his village, receives a curse that slowly corrupts his body, and he embarks on a journey to find a cure before it's too late.

However, I don't see the way the characters are presented from the beginning, whether villain or hero, that way. The story reflects something more complex as the film's plot progresses. We see that Lady Eboshi is more of a leader, who seeks to protect her people at all costs. She also provides refuge to people who are often despised by others, in this case, lepers and prostitutes. Here, everyone is appreciated and valued, not for what they did or their condition, but as the people they truly are. So, for me, Lady Eboshi is more of a leader who cares about protecting her people from wild animals that seek to attack her villagers. To provide a better quality of life for everyone, she seeks to evolve and grow with her people through the exploitation of iron ore.

While Mononoke turns out to be a more complex girl, filled with hatred and resentment, I imagine this has more to do with being raised by wolves and being taught that nature is sacred. But knowing how to maintain a balance between humans and nature, everything should flow correctly. The detail is that to obtain the highly prized iron, it is necessary to exploit the earth, so Mononoke perceives Lady Eboshi as a nefarious rival who only seeks to destroy everything in her path, regardless of the high price that must be paid for damaging nature. Like everything, abusing it is never a good thing; there are resources that unfortunately are not renewable and once damaged, they cannot be repaired no matter how hard one tries to make a change.

So we see this eternal conflict come to an extreme conclusion in order to end the war, but at what cost? What I liked most about this film is the spiritual touch it gives to nature. The way they portrayed their protective gods and spirits, who ultimately only seek to maintain a balance between both worlds, but when driven to the extreme by human greed, even animals become corrupted with hatred and contempt for them. And in the middle of it all, there is Prince Ashitaka, who, like the nature spirits, seeks to lessen these negative feelings between both sides to finally reconcile peace.

On the other hand, the design of the images, the fluidity of the landscapes—I must say it's a work of art, impressive for its pristine and lush details. The genius behind this production, Hayao Miyazaki, knew how to maintain the perfect balance between the calm that exists in nature and the intensity of the battles. So, for me, this film is one of those rare movies that leaves you thinking and reflecting on the power that nature exerts over the fragility of humanity, and that in the end, with a little understanding and compassion, one can achieve peace between both worlds, always showing respect for one another.

The reason I like this anime is the fierce princess, she's strong and bold. I liked her character in the anime. Also, the male lead is such a gentle man. I think it's one of the sweetest anime. Amazingly-written review.

Between different species, finding a balance is very complicated, at some point someone becomes corrupt and breaks with everything, nature must always be respected, taking advantage of its resources without squeezing it excessively, but not everyone has that reflection and it is not for less, each living being is individual, even in nature itself there are imbalances, so this film raises this issue in a more spiritual way, but with the same message, very beautiful indeed 🙏❤️

When I first started watching this, I honestly thought it would follow the path where the male MC would end up with the girl, but it was also a refreshing change that instead of romance, both leading characters ended up with a friend/good neighbor/companion type of relationship, they did go through a lot together but again, it doesn't have to lead to romance.

Of course the fantasy, folklore and story was fascinating and great, especially how they portrayed the mysticism of the supernatural in nature and giving credit how industrialization can be good.
