A religious visit from the praying mantis

Greetings, everyone in the #AmazingNature Community! Today I'm sharing some photos of a praying mantis that appeared in my grandfather's garden. So get ready, because I'll be telling you all about it and some very interesting facts that are worth reading.

I really enjoy wandering around the garden or a park to spot insects, birds, or any other little animal that might appear on my path (which are usually kittens), but in this case, it was a praying mantis that decided to perch on a cement pedestal at my grandfather's house while grooming itself with its little legs.

Saludos, gente de la Comunidad #AmazingNature. El día de hoy traigo algunas fotos de una Mantis Religiosa que apareció en el jardín de la casa de mi abuelo. Así que prepárense porque les hablaré sobre ella y algunas curiosidades muy interesantes que vale la pena leer.

A mí me gusta mucho merodear por los alredores del jardín o de un parque para ubicar insectos, aves o algún otro animalito que se me aparezca en el camino (que generalmente son gatitos), pero en este caso fue una mantis religiosa que decidió posarse en un pedestal de cemento en la casa de mi abuelo mientras se asicalaba con sus patitas.

I tried to focus on it as best I could to get good pictures, but I didn't want to get too close for fear of it flying away. From what I can see and its size, I think it's a female, although I'm no expert on the subject. I've only watched a few informative videos about insects, and I like to share information about them.

I understand that the female is larger than the male and more voracious, so she'll eat anything that comes near her and moves. Honestly, I have no idea how these insects reproduce. I'd like to see it in action because, from what I understand, the male always dies when he mates with the female because she literally eats his head.

Intenté enfocarla lo mejor que pude para tomarle buenas fotos, pero no quería acercarme tanto para evitar que huyera del lugar. Por lo que veo y por su tamaño, creo que es hembra, aunque no soy experto en el tema, sólo he visto algunos videos informativos sobre insectos y me gusta compartir información al respecto.

Tengo entendido que la hembra es más grande que el macho y que es más glotonoma que este, por lo que se comerá todo lo que se le acerque y se mueva. Honestamente no tengo idea de cómo se reproducen estos insectos, me gustaría verlo en acción porque lo que tengo entendido es que el macho siempre muere cuando se aparea con la hembra porque esta le come la cabeza, literalmente.

One of the things I love most about this insect is its posture with its front legs in a praying position, hence its name, praying mantis. I also really like the way it sways its body and the way it grabs its prey with its front legs, which are covered in many bumps that look like spines, but it actually uses them like claws to prevent its prey from escaping.

Some people think this insect is poisonous, that it stings or bites, but it's completely harmless. It only feeds on other insects smaller than itself and even on its own species (usually males when they mate). They have wings on the underside of their torso that they usually use to glide or move from one plant to another over short distances. This means they aren't very good at flying.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de este insecto es su postura con las patitas delanteras en forma de rezo, de allí su nombre como mantis religiosa. También me gusta mucho el balanceo que hace con su cuerpo y la forma en la que agarra a sus presas con las patas delanteras, las cuales están llenas de muchas protuberancias que parecen espinas, pero más bien ella la usa como garras para que su presa no escape.

Algunas personas piensan que este insecto es venenoso, que pica o muerde, pero es totalmente inofensivo. Sólo se alimenta de otros insectos más pequeños que él e incluso de su misma especie (normalmente machos cuando se aparean). Tienen alas en la parte inferior de su torso que suelen usar para planear o desplazarse de una planta a otra en corta distancia. Esto significa que no son buenos al volar.

They are generally green or brown, depending on their environment. Unlike other insects, they don't change color to camouflage themselves. Instead, they live in an environment that matches their color. For example, if they are green, they seek out green leaves or plants to hide in; if they are brown, they tend to look for dry leaves or tree trunks that match their color so that predators like birds or reptiles don't see them.

They also spend a lot of time motionless to remain undetected, waiting for food to pass by or approach them so they can catch it with their long, spiny legs. They aren't as fast as I thought; some take a while to catch their prey, but once they have it, it's difficult for it to escape.

Another point to mention is that they usually eat flies, crickets, and other small insects like bed bugs. And although their eyes appear to have pupils, they don't; it's just that they receive more light in that area, which is why they look like black dots.

As for their hearing, I thought they didn't have any, but they do. It's located on the underside of their abdomen, near their last two legs. Isn't that amazing? Insects are fascinating. A praying mantis can devour a fly completely in about 15 minutes.

Generalmente suelen ser verdes o marrones, dependiendo del entorno en el que reproduzcan. Ellas no cambian de color como otros insectos para camuflagearse con el ambiente sino que viven en un entorno que se asemeje a su color, es decir, si son verdes buscan hojas o plantas verdes para ocultarse, si son marrones, suelen buscar hojas secas o tallos de árboles que se relacionen con su color para que otros depredadores como aves o reptiles no las vean.

También pasan mucho tiempo sin moverse para pasar desapercibidas y esperan a que la comida les pase al frente o se acerquen a ella para atraparlas con sus largas patas llenas de púas. No son tan rápidas como yo pensaba, algunas tardan un poco en poder atrapar a su presa pero una vez que la agarran, es difícil que se les escape.

Otro aspecto a mencionar es que suelen comer moscas, grillos y otros insectos pequeños como chinches. Y aunque sus ojos parecieran que tuvieran una pupila, no lo tienen, es sólo que allí reciben más luz y por eso se les ve como un punto negro.

En cuanto a su oído, yo pensé que no tenía, pero sí oye. Este está ubicado en la parte inferior de su abdomen, a la altura de sus dos últimas patas. ¿No es genial? Los insectos son muy interesantes. A una mosca, la mantis puede devorarla por completo en unos 15 minutos aproximadamente.
