My first big disappointment this anime season... —eng/esp

Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, damas y caballeros. ¿Cómo están? ¿Cómo se encuentran el día de hoy? Espero que muy bien. Yo actualmente me estoy enfocando poco a poco más en los estudios, inclusive ya armé mi cronograma de evaluaciones; ahora tengo aproximadamente 20 días para hacer dos trabajos y presentar un examen. Veamos cómo resulta todo esto.

Mientras tanto, seguiré viendo series y animes. En este caso, me tocó uno de misterio, que sinceramente hacía mucho no veía de este género, simplemente porque ya no se hacen tanto como antes y son pocos los que salen. Esperaba envolverme en una buena historia, con una trama interesante y que me enganchara, pero al final no obtuve lo que quería por diversos motivos.

La recomendación me llegó por TikTok: una chica decía que quizás estábamos ante una obra del calibre de Los diarios de la boticaria, pero terminé totalmente decepcionado. Eso sí, he de decir que los primeros capítulos estuvieron interesantes; sin embargo, luego se logra apreciar una caída muy notoria que no me dan ganas de seguir viendo. Además, llevan un ritmo muy acelerado que sencillamente no atrapa a nadie. El misterio está, pero hay miles de cosas que no lo acompañan, por lo que podría decir que estoy ante una de las grandes decepciones de la temporada. Usualmente no suelo escoger mal para ver un anime nuevo, pero al parecer me gané la lotería de alguna u otra forma.

Así que, sin más dilación, hablemos de The Holy Grail of Eris y sus principales defectos.

I've been gradually focusing more on my studies lately—I've even put together my assessment schedule. I now have about 20 days to complete two assignments and sit one exam. Let's see how it all goes.

In the meantime, I'll keep watching series and anime. This time around, I picked a mystery one, which I haven't watched in a long time, simply because they don't make them as much as they used to and only a few come out these days. I was hoping to get immersed in a good story with an interesting plot that would really hook me, but in the end, I didn't quite get what I wanted for various reasons.

The recommendation came to me via TikTok—a girl was saying that we might be looking at a work on par with The Apothecary Diaries, but I ended up completely disappointed. That said, I have to admit the first few episodes were interesting; however, you can clearly notice a significant drop-off afterwards, and I've lost the urge to keep watching. What's more, the pacing is way too fast, which simply doesn't draw anyone in. The mystery is there, but there are countless things that don't support it, so I'd say I'm facing one of the biggest letdowns of the season. I don't usually pick the wrong anime to watch, but it seems I've hit the jackpot in one way or another.

So, without further ado, let's talk about The Holy Grail of Eris and its main flaws.

El anime nos sitúa en una niña llamada Constance, la cual presencia un juicio donde resulta ahorcada Scarlet Castiel, según por haber querido envenenar a otra dama, hecho totalmente infundado para sacarla del camino. Scarlet Castiel aspiraba a ser la princesa, ya que estaba comprometida con el hijo del rey, pero todo se iría retorciendo poco a poco con la aparición de una dama por la que el príncipe comenzaría a mostrar interés. Habiendo pasado algunos años, en una fiesta de la realeza para celebrar la futura boda de Constance, esta se verá envuelta en un embrollo donde se le acusará de ladrona por una dama que tiene una aventura con su prometido, intentando así destruir su reputación. Constance, al ser tan noble, no sabe cómo defenderse ante tal arremetida por parte de esa persona, por lo que internamente pide ayuda, apareciendo entre ella el espíritu de Scarlet Castiel, quien la poseerá para hacerse cargo de la situación, sacándola del apuro y hasta humillando a la otra dama, apareciendo luego en los periódicos debido a la impresionante actuación, recordándole a muchos a la fallecida Scarlet. Al parecer, el alma de Scarlet se ha asociado de manera extraña a Constance, por lo que esta última puede ver su espíritu. Debido a los valores de la familia de Constance, ella decide devolverle el favor a Scarlet averiguando quién realmente la mandó a matar y por qué. Si me preguntas a mí, esta es una premisa muy interesante que fácilmente tendría intervenciones impactantes cuando Scarlet posea el cuerpo de Constance para enfrentar a las personas que acabaron con ella, pero simplemente en el anime se desperdicia un poco el asunto.

The anime centres on a girl named Constance, who witnesses a trial in which Scarlet Castiel is hanged, ostensibly for attempting to poison another lady—a completely baseless charge designed to remove her from the picture. Scarlet Castiel had aspirations of becoming princess, as she was engaged to the king's son, but things slowly began to unravel with the emergence of a lady in whom the prince started to show interest.

A few years later, at a royal ball celebrating Constance's upcoming wedding, she finds herself caught up in a scandal when she is accused of theft by a lady who is having an affair with her fiancé, in an attempt to ruin her reputation. Constance, being so noble, doesn't know how to defend herself against such an attack from that person, so she silently pleads for help. Suddenly, the spirit of Scarlet Castiel appears beside her and possesses her to take control of the situation, getting her out of trouble and even humiliating the other lady. The incident later appears in the newspapers due to her impressive performance, reminding many of the late Scarlet.

Apparently, Scarlet's soul has become strangely linked to Constance, allowing the latter to see her spirit. Driven by her family's values, Constance decides to repay Scarlet by investigating who really ordered her death and why. If you ask me, this is a very interesting premise that could easily lead to impactful moments when Scarlet possesses Constance's body to confront those who brought about her downfall, but the anime simply wastes the potential a bit.

Una de las principales falencias sin lugar a dudas es la animación, la cual en los primeros capítulos es bastante decente, no destaca mucho, hasta que luego llegamos a los demás donde tenemos trazos irregulares y distintas maneras de dibujar a un personaje, algo desastroso. Supongo que el presupuesto se fue de sabático. Ojalá el anime se pudiera defender solo mediante la historia, como hacen otros muchos animes con animación pésima pero historia increíble, pero es que eso acá, no importa cómo lo veas, no ocurre en lo absoluto. La dirección del anime es pésima, con un montón de cosas ocurriendo rapidísimo y saltos de días que descolocan a cualquiera. Es fácil perderse viendo el anime y no creo que sea algo hecho a propósito, sencillamente la historia está mal contada, haciendo que el misterio se vea opacado en todos los sentidos. Particularmente esperé que lo de la mala animación solo fuese un solo capítulo, pero al ya ver dos o tres capítulos más con esa animación, simplemente no creo que llegue a mejorar en lo absoluto.

Creo que es triste el nivel de la adaptación de esta obra, debido a que viene de unas novelas ligeras. Vi a muchos fans emocionados para que el producto final deje demasiado que desear, y eso que muchos esperaban tener un anime con varias temporadas, pero por el paso al que van, seguro van a buscar comprimir todo en los 12 capítulos que les dieron. Al final quedo yo con una espinita clavada ante todo este asunto, por lo que tendré que recurrir a leerme la novela, que creo que es bastante corta. Lugar donde busco sale que son solo cuatro tomos. El misterio me llama y yo voy a ese lugar, donde la historia sí esté bien contada. Hasta luego, camaradas. Sin más nada que decirles, me despido por el día de hoy.

One of the main flaws, without a doubt, is the animation. In the first few episodes it's fairly decent—nothing special—but then we get to the rest, where we have inconsistent linework and different ways of drawing the same character, which is an absolute mess. I suppose the budget went on sabbatical. I wish the anime could at least hold its own through the story, as many other anime do with terrible animation but an incredible plot, but that's simply not the case here, no matter how you look at it. The direction of the anime is dreadful, with a ton of things happening at breakneck speed and time jumps that throw anyone off. It's easy to get lost watching it, and I don't think that's intentional—the story is just poorly told, which overshadows the mystery in every way. I'd particularly hoped the bad animation would be limited to just one episode, but after seeing two or three more episodes with that same quality, I simply don't think it's going to improve at all.

I think the level of this adaptation is disappointing, especially since it's based on light novels. I saw many fans excited, only for the final product to leave a lot to be desired—and that's despite many hoping for an anime with multiple seasons. At the rate they're going, they'll surely try to cram everything into the 12 episodes they were given. In the end, I'm left with a lingering sense of disappointment about the whole affair, so I'll have to turn to reading the novel, which I believe is quite short. From what I've seen, it's only four volumes long. The mystery calls to me, and I'll go where the story is actually well told. See you later, comrades. Nothing more to say—I'll sign off for today.
