Tipas Hopia: A Beloved Filipino Snack

A few days ago, a relative sold me a box of Tipas Hopia. I remembered that it was one of my favorite snacks as a kid and it's been a while since I've had one. I immediately said yes and got my box of hopia.

Hopia is a Filipino version of the Chinese mooncakes. It comes with a variety of sweet fillings but the most popular here is the Hopiang Monggo. (Mung beans) This is a nostalgic afternoon snack for many Filipinos back in the 90s as it can be found almost in every local store. And even if you don't have money, you can still enjoy it by taking an "utang" or a verbal IOU from the store owner.

Tipas is the name of its place of origin, Ibayo Tipas in Taguig City which is within Metro Manila. Belen Flores established this hopia business called D'Original Tipas Hopia and was later passed on to her daughters. But there were other hopia businesses that sprung within the vicinity, all carrying the famous Tipas Hopia name. The one I got in the photos is from another manufacturer, Ribonette's, whose quality is also on par with the original.

As for the taste, a good batch of hopiang monggo that is oven-fresh would have a right amount of sweetness that's kind of starchy because of the mung beans. This is complemented by a slight crunchiness and flakyness of the crust. The flavor is not too strong and you'll find yourself going for seconds. And yes, you can eat it oven fresh as you can time your purchase right at the moment that it is delivered to the store. This is also best served with hot coffee or an ice-cold Coca-Cola. I prefer the latter. My son has taken a liking to it as well, it seems.

If any of you guys happen to visit Manila and would also like to try hopiang monggo, let me know and I'll try my best to acquire the best ones. Thank you for reading.
