Historical Witness

The moment in history I witnessed was the 1st black American President. It was 2008 election and Barack Obama was elected as the 1st Black President in History. ” The framers of the Constitution always hoped that our leadership would not be limited to Americans of wealth or family connections. Subject to the prejudices of their time—many of them owned slaves—most would not have foreseen an African American president.” (White House Historical Association)

Black or African-American

I say Black because that’s what people of color is to me. The articles in the papers, magazines, & online will refer to him as African-American. I believe that to be African-American one needs to be of African ethnicity but born in America or became a legal resident of America. Those of color who are born in America & have no African ethnicity, to me is Black.

Back to the President………

President Barack Obama began his presidency the following January 2009 with his inauguration which also was historic. With "1,8 million" people witnessed his swearing into office. (Ben Nuckols, Associated Press) This includes the people who was in the Mall outside of the Capitol building and along the parade route.

My Feelings

It seemed unreal just a bit to me because for the most part one would think that a black person would ever be allowed to hold such a position. Black people are usually looked down on & thought to be less privileged the white Americans. It was a great feeling to have been a witness to such an event. And was totally awesome to see that a black man can have the power to change society. President Obama did a lot of good for those who were less fortunate in the country & accomplished many successful tasks that helped all in America during those years.
