Trying Out This Crackers for The First Time! (Plus Hoarding More Gelatine!)
Hello! A blessed Monday to everyone! This post is somewhat a continuation to my previous post where I was able to score some buy one take one promo for my cake business. (What Made Me Go Out and Walk During The Lunar New Year)
Somewhere in my mind kept thinking of the remaining boxes of gelatine left at the store when I got home. This promo is probably just once in a lifetime and I wouldn't want to let it pass. I sent a message to my brother and asked if he would be in the city on the next two days and told him to purchase the remaining boxes because I can't purchase all at once because it would be too heavy. He said he'll try.
Next day, I asked him again. Lady luck was on my side as he was on his way to the city. I sent him the details of the location after.
And tadah! The remaining boxes of gelatine was finally hoarded. I was also surprised to see another freebie. A kilo of crushed cookies! I told my brother he should've picked the crackers instead because I have no idea what to do with it.
He told me it was the staff who chose the freebie. Oh okay. Maybe I'll just have to make more cheesecakes in the future. But I'm happy I won't have to worry purchasing gelatine online for a while. I only have to think of where to purchase the agar next time.
I also promised my brother that I would be giving him some of the cheesecake I am making and will cook some of the crackers when he comes home. However, I didn't expect him to come sooner. I still haven't made the toppings for the cheesecake so I was only able to give him the free crackers I had on my first purchase at the baking store.
I've seen this type of crackers several times at the grocery store but never dared to purchase it. It looks similar to the communion bread given during a Catholic mass. Apparently, this cracker is the same as the cracker called "chicharap" from the Chinese fast food restaurant Chowking. The texture is light, airy, crunchy, and kind of have a biting sensation when you put it on your tongue.

I immediately started cooking when my brother told me that he was already heading home. Of course, the first try was a fail. Lol. The crackers didn't puffed as I was expecting it.
Oh, maybe second time's a charm!
I waited for the oil to be really hot before I placed the second batch.

Seeing them bloom was really amusing to watch! So the key was to wait for the oil to be really hot before putting it, else, it won't puff or expand. The crackers also burn easily which is why you have to put it out as soon as the cracker bloomed.
My brother arrived while I was nly beginning to fry it. I told him to wait because it's only quick to fry.
I gave him two full packs of the cooked crackers. Should've been enough as a snack, right? The cracker is also oily so putting it on a paper towel will help reduce it.
It's good as a snack with vinegar sauce! Glad I still have some left from the fried tofu I made last time.
Anyway, trying to cook this cracker felt like a part of my inner child was satisfied. The mystery has been finally solved!
Have you tried this cracker?
Thanks for reading! 💚
This post is so much fun! The crackers look delicious, and I love the story behind them. Thanks for sharing!
I've tried that crackers but I'm not the one who cooked, I bought for 6 crackers for 5 pesos.
It's surprisingly cheap, right? The one sold on Chowking costs around 70 pesos. I wonder how much they profit from their chicharap. Haha
Thank you 😊
