Let's Make Churro Cups!

I remember churros was quite popular about a decade ago in the Philippines. And because the hype didn't reach my province, I decided to make my own. And obviously, it didn't turn out good. I have already forgiven my younger self and told her we will try again with better tools and ingredients.

✨️ Churro Cups! ✨️

Churro is a fried dough made of flour, eggs, butter, sugar, and butter. It's tasty as is but moreso when you pair it with a dip like chocolate. This snack originates from Spain.

The common churro is simply the shape of the stick, sometimes the it also bends forming a 'U' shape, then dipped into the sauce. In my case, I prefered the sauce to be inside the churros so I opted to shape the churros into cups.

📝 Here's What You'll Need 📝

DOUGH:

  • 1 1/4 Cup Water
  • 2 Tbsp. Butter
  • 2 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt
  • 160 Grams All Purpose Flour
  • 2 Eggs
  • Cinnamon Powder

SAUCE:

  • Water
  • 1 Bar White Chocolate
  • 1 Tbsp. Fresh Milk
  • 1 Tbsp. All Purpose Cream

👩🏻‍🍳 Let's Cook!!!

1.) Put water on the pan and bring to a simmer before adding sugar. Mix until sugar is dissolved into the water.

2.) Then add butter. Stir until butter is melted into the water.

3.) Pour the flour next and mix until you make a dough and flour is completely combined and mixed. The dough might be stiff and crumbly. Don't worry because that's alright.

Remove from stove and let the dough cool down for around 2 minutes.

4.) Then crack one egg and mix until it has completely binded with the dough.

Then crack the second and egg and mix until it has combined with the dough completely.

5.) Now, prepare your piping bag and piping tip. I'm glad I was finally able to use this star piping tip that I bought months ago.

Put the dough inside the piping bag and twist the top to compress the dough.

6.) Hold the piping bag at the bottom and top while carefully pressing the bag and swirling the dough in circles while leaving a space on the middle to form a cup. This is my first time doing it so please understand why it looked imperfect and inconsistent.

Place the piped dough in a container and freeze it for at least an hour to make the dough firm. I placed an aluminum sheet under so the dough doesn't stick on the container.

7.) Fry the dough immediately as soon as you take it out from the freezer because the dough will revert to being soft at room temperature. Fry until golden brown and place on a container layered with paper towel to drain excess oil.

8.) Then on a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon powder.

9.) Coat the fried churros with it.

10.) Now, let's make the sauce! I used a white chocolate bar for the sauce.

Put water on the pan and bring to a simmer.

11.) Break down the chocolate bar and put into a small glass bowl. Also add the fresh milk on this step. Then put the bowl into the simmering water.

Mix occasionally while the chocolate bar begins to soften. Then add the all purpose cream. Continue mixing.

12.) Remove from pan when the chocolate has completely melted then use a syringe to pour the sauce inside the cups.

And we're done! Whew!

Love for Churro Cup! ♡

Churros is best eaten when freshly cooked. It's crunchy, smells good, and tastes so much better with a dip!

The only thing that I didn't like much is that I made the sauce/dip too runny. Maybe I shouldn't have added milk.

I made another batch two weeks later, this time shaped in stick. I didn't add any cream nor milk, I just melted the chocolate bar. The melted chocolate was too thick and it was difficult to spread into the churros. The sauce and dip may be a flop in terms of its consistency but they taste good nonetheless!

Well, making churros is fun and satisfies my craving for sweet pastry, but I don't think it's a healthy food and too much consumption of it isn't good. Maybe a better way is to share it to lessen your consumption and have them savor your freshly cooked churros. I'm pretty sure kids will love this sweet snack because the smell of it alone is already mouthwatering.

Thanks for reading! 💚

I like how you didn't give up after your first try and made another batch. That's the fun and learning in the kitchen. Even if the sauce was a bit thick, what matter is it taste good and made you happy. I agree, churros are best shared so everyone can enjoy the sweet treat together.
