A Minimalist’s Wardrobe Story.

I was at a clothing store recently to buy trousers, and the salesperson in that store brought out all sorts of multicoloured and patterned palazzo trousers. Even though the trousers are just the perfect styles for me, the multiple colours and patterns are not for me because I don’t like them.

I’ve always been the two-piece girl. I have trousers of three to four plain colours that would match with many of my tops so that I won’t have to spend excessively on clothes often. Or I have gowns where I would just pair with my capes of plain colours. This has been saving me costs over the years, however, in 2020 when I decided to learn tailoring, my style became compromised.

Not an intentional compromise, but it was a result of many practicals. I have never been the tight fitted clothing wearing type, but I had to sew many of those styles for practice, and I eventually had them all in my wardrobe just because I wanted to perfect the style before I tried it on a customer’s fabric.

It was indeed a beautiful time because I had many clothes in my wardrobe including the ones I didn’t wear for a very long time.

One day after I had finished training as a fashion designer and tailor, I looked at my wardrobe and realized that I had a lot of clothes and shoes that would remain there for a very long time if I didn’t do anything about it.

So, I called one of my friends who was a ready to wear vendor to ask how I could get some of them sold off so I could return to my simple dressing style and use the money on something else.

The outfits were in their best form, so I got them sold at affordable prices. However, I had a lot of them left. So, I met with my hostel mates one after the other and gifted them some of those fits as parting gifts when I left school in 2021.

Recently, I have started having the same happen as a result of attending family and friend events. There was a perfectly sewn yellow dress I wore to my uncle’s wedding. The cloth is so beautiful, but I know that it’s not my style, and I would give it out soon. I already know who to give it to, so, I’m just waiting to adjust it to the size of the person I want to give.

In my wardrobe today, you’ll find trousers of three plain colours jean and palazzo alike with multiple tops I use to pair with them, casual joggers, and hoodies because this is very comfortable for me, few corporate wears in case I need to attend corporate events, and outfits I can wear to parties where there are no requirements for a uniform style.

I have some already packed to give out, but not selling any for now because the people I want to give are those that badly need the outfits I’ll give them. I’m currently just waiting to return home from my trip so I could get the wears to them.

Images are mine.

I like to donate, give away, and even sell my clothes when I no longer use them and they are in excellent condition. It's a nice way to contribute to the planet and to our wallet. Cheers
