Francesco Costa is one of the journalists and writers I follow and admire the most. Deputy director of the Post, voice of the Morning podcast, face of his YouTube channel, Francesco tells and explains America and Americans like no other.

As soon as we find an opportunity near the house to go and hear it, we try not to let it escape. Yesterday he was in Mantua, guest of the Literature Festival and so we got in the car and went.

Unlike last time, in which a journalist interviewed him and asked questions about the United States, here the thread

The TV series were the hosts. They showed Francesco some snippets from some episodes and asked him to tell us about America starting from what the television series show us.

I found this approach very brilliant. We all know the USA thanks to TV series and movies. Hollywood has been the tool with which the United States has exercised its soft power for decades, exporting its culture around the world. Only one other culture has managed to replicate something similar, the Japan with anime.

The surgery lasted only thirty minutes but it amply showed that it could last much longer, because after half an hour you wanted more.

Fragments of The West Wing, Shameless, The Bear and Mad Men were screened. Surprisingly, I've only seen one of these series, although I know them all by fame. This meeting made me realise that I have to recover them as soon as possible.

I was very satisfied, also because despite the fact that the event is important and the large audience, in the end there was not a long line for the signature copies and I managed to get my copy of the first book he wrote signed. Now I've dedicated two out of four, I need a couple more festivals to complete them all.

A differenza dell’ultima volta, in cui una giornalista lo intervistava e faceva domande sugli Stati Uniti, qui il filo
conduttore erano le serie tv. Hanno mostrato a Francesco degli spezzoni tratti da alcune puntate e gli hanno chiesto di raccontarci l’America partendo da quello che le serie televisive ci mostrano.

Ho trovato questo approccio molto brillante. Tutti noi conosciamo gli USA grazie alle serie tv e al cinema. Hollywood è stato per decadi lo strumento con cui gli Stati Uniti hanno esercitato il proprio soft power, esportando la loro cultura in giro per il mondo. Solo un’altra cultura è riuscita a replicare qualcosa di simile, il
Giappone con gli anime.

L’intervento è durato solo trenta minuti ma ha ampiamente dimostrato che poteva durare molto di più, perché dopo mezz’ora ne volevi ancora.
Sono stati proiettati frammenti di The West Wing, Shameless, The Bear e Mad Men. Sorprendentemente io ho visto solo una di queste serie, sebbene le conosca tutte di fama. Questo incontro mi ha fatto capire che devo recuperarle appena possibile.

Io sono stato soddisfattissimo, anche perché nonostante la manifestazione sia importante e il pubblico numeroso, alla fine non c’era una grande fila per i firmacopie e sono riuscito a farmi autografare la mia copia del primo libro che ha scritto. Ora ne ho dedicato due su quattro, mi servono un altro paio di festival per completarli tutti.
