Vergennes, Vermont

We visited Vergennes, Vermont this week. We are working on visiting all 251 towns in Vermont - have a book that lists them all π

Most towns we try to visit a local lunch spot. Vergennes is actually a city, incorporated in 1788 - the first incorporated city in Vermont.

This photo is from 3 Squares restaurant website. They do a nice breakfast and lunch business. All other photos are my own of course as required by this community. I just wanted to call out the local business and realized I didn't have a shot of the store front.

Vergennes was settled even earlier than 1788 in 1766. Most towns in Vermont were chartered in the 1760's. Chartered and laid out by land speculators with settlers to follow later mostly after the American Revolution. Because of land disputes with New York, the state was added to the union until 1791 as the 14th state.

Vergennes has a beautiful, old free library started in 1911 and opened in 1912.

I have some photos of the interior of the library that I may post separately. Free libraries are a proud tradition in Vermont and most towns (even the small ones) have a town library that allows residents to borrow books free of charge.
Beautiful little town especially the library.
And your burger looks delicious π
Have a great weekend and all the success in visiting all Vermont cities.
Thanks. We added the lunch component because we weren't making much progress on the list. A good restaurant draws us in lol
