Short eared owl

Up high

Suprise birding find yesterday.

Side eye

We found several short eared owls flying and hunting over some open fields near Lake Champlain.

Mountains

We were headed to Lake Champlain to try some ice fishing but turned around and went back to the house for cameras.

Through trees

The owls were still there and still hunting an hour later when we returned.

Cleaning claw

I had never seen a short eared owl. We were considering a search for a snowy owl as they are sometimes seen along Lake Champlain but didn't due to no reported sightings recently.

Whatcha talkin bout Willis

We even saw a local Audubon Society staffer that stopped to check out the short eared owl and they confirmed no local sightings of the snowy owl this year 🙁

Wowwwww!! I'm glad you did go back, amazing shots! It's so hard so see those species, let alone be able to catch them perching; even more, with a great background! !BBH

We have Barn Owls living near us. I can see them hunting at dawn and dusk as i drive my car to our house but i can never manage to get photos of them. Congrats on such lovely photos !

Great shots of this owl...
My bird photos are always out of focus, or I just have the branch without the bird 😅

Thanks. This owl was quite patient with getting its picture taken haha we saw it in the distance, drove up closer, took some pictures from car, got out, took some pictures, crossed road, took some pictures, walked through deep snow in ditch to the fence, took even more pictures. The owl never flew away.
