Huge Cottonwoods

Bare trees

Dead cottonwood trees against a blue sky. Empire Ranch, near Sonoita, Arizona.

Stump

These massive cottonwoods grow along the creek beds in the arid desert.

Sign

The cottonwoods are distinctive enough to merit an informational sign 🙂

Green Cottonwood

The still living trees are massive habitats for the local birds.

Shadows

The sun moved behind the clouds changing the lighting.

Green to gone

These cottonwoods have been here for longer than the ranch. There is a mix of mature trees plus some older dead trees and younger ones filling in.

Thanks. These trees only live about 100 years so there is a mix of the old dead ones with the newer ones.

Beautiful trees, even the dead ones. Love their crinkly branches.
Have a wonderful day 😊

Sonoita is quite nice for birdwatching. My grandpa used to plant the cottonwoods on purpose near the San Pedro river and by the ditches the Mormons built near our house. Those thing would grow up quickly then die off quickly.

I think settlers all over plant them because they grow so quickly. Some of the farms around here have some massive, old cottonwoods... and due to my neighbor have a couple huge old ones, there are a couple young cottonwoods growing around my yard.
