Equality
One would think that because it's the 21st century a lot of mindsets would have been done away with without further ado but such is not the case when it comes with the issue of gender equality.
As much as I believe that both genders are equal and should be treated equally, I also know that for many years to come there will not be a total equality of genders.
A lot of times, the female gender has been underestimated and underrated that people still see it as the norm even though it's not, especially in Africa where the mentality that men are far more superior than women still runs around rent free in people's heads which results to various atrocious activities being done to the woman folk.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying anything bad about men in general but bad things shouldn't be said about women too and even though the Bible described women as Weaker vessels doesn't actually make us weak and useless. The world would be a terrible place without women in it and that's a fact.
On to the topic of the day, and the question asked:
- HAVE I EVER BEEN DISCRIMINATED BECAUSE OF MY SEX?
The answer to this question is a big YES!
A male friend of mine and I were talking about marriage one time and the roles of each spouse in the marriage. We were actually having an interesting conversation when he made a remark about my place being in the kitchen and the house as a housewife, that I don't have a business doing all the things I'd love to do because it'd stress me out. He also said that I don't look like someone that should be allowed to work because I deserve soft life.
If that was his way of complimenting me, then he did a very horrible job of it because what did he mean by all that?
I fumed immediately and gave him a piece of my mind telling him that he had no right whatsoever to dictate how my life should go and what I should do and not do, all because I am a woman. Usually, most men that say women shouldn't work don't have the resources to fully take proper care of a woman and once a demand is made, they see it as billing and yet they don't support that a woman is in a better position to work and make her own money because telling a woman not work at all because she's female is a very odd thing to tell someone.
Another incident where I experienced discrimination because of my gender was at my friend's place. I went to visit a friend of mine and I happened to go when lunch was being prepared. In no time, lunch was ready and everyone ate, including my friend's brother. After eating, it's expected that everyone wash the plate they used to eat (that is what I am used to). I was shocked to know that in my friend's family, the male children don't wash their dishes after eating because it's regarded as a female chore that males shouldn't be caught doing.
I was surprised but because it wasn't my family, I just minded my business and went my way after seeing my friend.
- WHAT LESSONS DID I GET FROM IT?
Whoever still thinks that women shouldn't do this or that just because they're women in this present day needs to upgrade the way their mind works. That's a myopic and backward way of thinking without considering all the great things women have done in the world at large and still having the thought that women should just sit and have babies means that such a person thinking that way doesn't like to move forward.
The female gender has shown time and time again that we are all capable of things people (men) thought that we weren't capable of doing and it's a big win for us all.
I also learned not to discriminate against men too. There are some stereotypes running around that prevent men from being their true selves or doing what they're supposed to do and I don't want to be a part of it so I make a conscious effort not to.
- IF I WERE TO STOP DISCRIMINATION TOTALLY, WHAT WOULD I DO?
It's not going to be an easy task eradicating totally a particular mindset that is held by many people all around the world but as they always say, "change begins with each and every one of us" which means that our individual efforts driven towards change will eventually lead to something bigger and better for the world.
If I were to address the world in a world conference, it'd be to talk about the ills of any form of discrimination be it gender or otherwise. I'd encourage people to do away with the old mindset concerning our different genders and embrace the fact that we're all equal because the rain and the sun wouldn't pick a gender to either fall on or shine on.
Let me end with this popular quote that everyone has surely heard before.
"What a man can do, a woman can do better."
;)
That point of plate washing got me cracked 😄😄😄.
That was what they taught us while growing up, guys do farm work while the ladies do home chores 😄.
But it has changed now because those people at home do no longer go to farms the way we did back then 😎
It creates a rift between siblings in the family and the males will grow up not knowing how to do basic essential chores.
Yeah,
If not corrected, they'll take this habit to their different homes when married
First all let me catch you drop your plate for me to wash after eating, no food for you for as long as that plate is still on that sink, infact everybody's plate would have their initials on it, you will always present your plate for your food to be dished on.
Secondly, a woman's place is not in the kitchen as far as am consigned. That mentality needs to be erased totally.
😂. My thoughts exactly.
Yeah. It does.
