The Rocca Brancaleone dates back to the 15th century AD and was built by the Venetians.
Inside today is one of the most beautiful parks in Ravenna.

La Rocca Brancaleone risale al XV secolo dopo Cristo e fu costruita dai veneziani.
Al suo interno oggi si trova uno dei più bei parchi di Ravenna.

La Serenissima, or the Venetian Republic (a maritime republic with a capital in Venice), took control of Ravenna around 1440. Walls were erected to protect the city. The Rocca Brancaleone was built at this time, when the Venetian government planned to build a fortress following the conquest they had just made. This fortress is certainly one of the most important historical traits that the Venetians left in Ravenna.

La Serenissima, ovvero la Repubblica di Venezia ( repubblica marinara con capitale Venezia), assunse il controllo di Ravenna Circa nel 1440. Per proteggere la città furono erette delle mura. La Rocca Brancaleone nasce proprio in questo momento, quando il governo veneziano progettò la costruzione di una fortezza a seguito della conquista che avevano appena fatto. Questa rocca è sicuramente uno dei tratti storici più importanti che lasciarono i veneziani a Ravenna.

Work on the fortress was financed by Doge Francesco Foscari. The design is attributed to Giacomo Corner and Vitale Lando, while the direction of the work was done by Giovanni Francesco da Massa

I lavori della fortezza furono finanziati dal doge Francesco Foscari. Il progetto è attribuito a Giacomo Corner e Vitale Lando, mentre la direzione dei lavori fu fatta da Giovanni Francesco da Massa

With the passage of time, this fortress lost its military importance and in 1877 it became the property of the Rava family, while in 1965 the fortress was purchased by the municipality of Ravenna.

Con il passare del tempo questa rocca perse la sua importanza militare e nel 1877 ne divenne proprietaria la famiglia Rava, mentre nel 1965 la rocca fu acquistata dal comune di Ravenna.

The fortress is a quadrilateral of about 2,200 square metres with four towers at the corners. These are connected by curtain walls. In the 1400s, the coast was closer than where it is now, so a long time ago, it was possible to guard the coastline from the towers and walls.

La rocca è un quadrilatero di circa 2.200 mq con quattro torrioni agli angoli. Questi sono collegati tra loro tramite cortine murarie. Nel 1400 la costa era più vicina di dove è ora quindi, tanto tempo fa, dai torrioni e dalle mura era possibile presidiare la linea costiera.

Years ago, a map from 1605 was found where it is possible to note the location of the fortress at that time. From that map it could be deduced that the fortress was built in the north-east corner of the walls of Ravenna near the Montone river.

Anni fa fu ritrovata una mappa del 1605 dove è possibile notare la posizione della rocca che aveva all'epoca. Da quella mappa di poteva dedurre che la rocca fu edificata nell'angolo nord-est delle mura di Ravenna vicino al fiume Montone.

In its lifetime, the fortress suffered two major attacks in which it capitulated:
1-In 1509 against the troops of Pope Julius II's papal army. In this battle, the fortress capitulated after a month under siege by the Duke of Ferrara.
2-In 1512 with the Battle of Ravenna. In this case, the fortress was taken by French troops after only four days. One of the main reasons for this capitulation was the fact that adequate repairs did not take place after the siege of 1509.

In tutta la sua vita la fortezza subì due attacchi rilevanti in cui capitolò:
1-Nel 1509 contro le truppe dell'esercito pontificio di papa Giulio II. In questa battaglia la fortezza capitolò dopo un mese sotto l’assedio del duca di Ferrara.
2-Nel 1512 con la battaglia di Ravenna. In questo caso la fortezza fu presa dalle truppe francesi dopo solo 4 giorni. Uno dei motivi principali di questa capitolazione fu il fatto che non avvennero le adeguate riparazioni dopo l’assedio del 1509.

Inside the Rocca there is a beautiful park and also a children's playground, and open-air film screenings and musical events are held inside. The Rocca is the venue for the Ravenna Jazz festival.

All’interno della Rocca si trova un bellissimo parco ed anche un'area attrezzata per bambini, inoltre all’interno vengono eseguite proiezioni cinematografiche all'aperto ed eventi musicali. La Rocca è il luogo in cui avviene il Ravenna Jazz festival.
