The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer
The Satsuma Complex is a comic crime novel by the comedia Bob Mortimer. It is the first one by him that I have read, but we have the sequel and his autobiography on our shelves. I think at least two of these books came from charity shops. They may end up going back to one when we are finished with them.
I do not know how aware people outside the UK are of Bob. I first saw him on Vic Reeves Big Night Out that was on TV in the early 90s. It was a surreal show that reminded me of Spike Milligan. He and Vic have done other shows together.
More recently Bob has been through heart surgery and reached a new audience on the fishing show he does with fellow comedian Paul Whitehouse where they talk about mental health as well as mucking about near rivers. He is also a frequent guest on the panel show Would I Lie To You?
Getting back to the book, it is about a young lawyer called Gary who gets mixed up in some nasty criminals. Bob was a lawyer before he got into comedy and you can imagine him as Gary. Gary is not really enjoying life until he meets a girl, but this leads him into all sorts of trouble. That sounds grim and it does get quite dark, but the dialogue is pure Bob with lots of whimsy. He spends a lot of time talking to squirrels. It gets a bit meta as the novel features a book that is also called The Satsuma Complex, but it seems to be a different book.
There is a bit of a trend for gentle crime books such as those by Richard Osman, but this has its own style. It is not a very long book, but it plays out at a nice pace and the ending does not disappoint. It did make me laugh at times. I will be reading the follow-up soon, but I will have something different before that from my pile of books I want to read.

The mix of fun and serious themes sounds like a new and interesting approach to the crime genre.
I know others have done it, but this guy has his own style.
I have a feeling they're going to adapt the book into a TV series
I could imagine that. They need to get the right cast for it. Bob is too old to play Gary.
I wouldn't have heard of him if I wasn't married to a Brit. Jamie loves him.
He has become a 'national treasure'. He seems like someone it would be fun to hang out with.
I haven't heard of Bob Mortimer, not sure if he has much exposure here in the US. Does this book include much comedy or is it more serious? I don't think I've ever read a "gentle crime book" before.
It is a mix, but even the bad people talk in an odd way. I don't read a lot of crime fiction, but I know that can be very dark and may not be to my tastes.
Sounds interesting. I don't read a lot of crime fiction either, but a book written by a comedian sounds interesting to try.
Never heard of him, sounds kinda personal, transferring himself to the character
Steevc please can you ask your friend to leave me alone what he is doing is classed as cyber bullying and it also feels like a racist attack https://hive.blog/hive-167922/@themarkymark/re-kgakakillerg-t2vgrq

Please, you don't want people to leave you alone. If you did, you wouldn't be so deliberately antagonistic.
Mommy didn't hug you, now you NEED this.
It's okay, I'm here for you. 😘
I read the satsuma project a few years ago, I had a couple of laugh out loud moments, but really was disappointed with the follow up, binned it after 50 pages ( I always do, if a book doesn't grab me by then it gets thrown in the rubbish).
I could never understand people thinking vic reeves was funny, I found him annoying, smug and boring. mortimer well the jury is still out, but I wouldn't tune into see him on the box either.
Well I shall give it a go anyway. We all have different tastes. I enjoyed Big Night Out at the time, but was not into Shooting Stars. I think Vic is more into painting these days. Bob seems like a pretty genuine guy to me. He's not a 'showbiz' type.
