The joys and challenges of Europe by rail
We have done a fair bit of travelling around Europe and some of our recent trips and been totally by train. That can be challenging. On one trip we were trying to get back across Germany to get the Eurostar from Brussels, but floods had caused chaos. Similar things can happen with planes, but airports tend to be better places to hang out than stations. We still want to avoid flying, so we decided to let the train take the strain again this time.
We can easily get to St Pancras where the Eurostar starts and on this trip did not have to be there too early. Our trip was arranged via Byway who sorted our Interrail pass. That allows you to make multiple journeys over a set number of travel days. We opted to go first class this time. That is partly for the comfort, but also to have more chance of a seat if we had to take an alternative train. It is generally best to book a seat, but that relies on catching the right train.
We have travelled on the Eurostar a few times. It whisks you under the Channel in a fairly short time and can get to over 300km/h. We were in the Plus section, so you got a meal with proper cutlery. I could have had some wine too.
We were about a half hour from Brussels when the train slowed down and then jerked to a stop. We were told it had hit something and they had to investigate. As the train takes over a kilometre to stop that took a while. Eventually we were informed that it had hit a person! The police and other services had to come out to look into it. I am assuming it was a suicide, but have not seen a news story about it. We ended up getting to Brussels about four hours late. Byway had suggested an alternative train, but we just missed it. We tried queuing at the Eurostar desk, but they only had one person on. Eventually we decided to just wait for the next available train to Cologne where we had a hotel booked. We had hoped to visit the Christmas market, but it was closed by the time we got there and did not open before we moved on.
The train from Brussels to Cologne did at least have a certain retro style. There was even a special shelf for your tablet to watch movies.
Cologne cathedral (the Dom) is a splendid building and it is right next to the station. We stayed at the Mondial Am Dom Hotel that was just on the other side. It was nice and they had lots of art on display. You do tend to get a good buffet breakfast at places like this and we ate well as we had some travelling to do. We had a walk around the city centre. Most shops did not seem to open until 10am, but we managed to get some cheese to have at Christmas.
We travelled via Hannover on the next stage to Magdeburg. Something you do not see in the UK are double decker trains due to our Victorian bridges and tunnels. As much of mainland Europe was destroyed in the war they could rebuild their railways. There were no issues with the trains on this part of our journey. When we got to Hannover the next train was already waiting across the platform, so we could get out of the cold.
One of our kids has been living and working in Magdeburg for a year and could be there for another two years. The other one flew over so we could be together at Christmas. We have been there a few times now and are getting to know the city. We have already seen some of the sights, so did not go out too much. It was really cold anyway. Something we have used there and in other German cities is the Fairtiq app. This allows you to travel on a lot of trams and buses. You link it to your bank card and then you just swipe in and out at each end of your journey. It works out where you went from GPS. Mind you, I have yet to be asked to show a ticket on German trams. Magdeburg is proud of being the home of scientist Otto von Guericke who showed the power of the vacuum by demonstrating that horses could not pull apart a split sphere with the air taken out.
Our first visit to Magdeburg was just before Christmas 2024. A week later someone drove a car into the Christmas market and several people were killed. We could see that security was tighter this time with large obstacles around the market. We had a wander there and had some Glühwein (mulled wine). The locals are happy to be out in the cold with some hot wine. We had dinner at Peter Pane who do a good range of veggie and vegan burgers, as well as meat versions. In the toilets you can hear someone reading the Peter Pan story in German.

Nice to see you travel to this old, lazy country - Cologne my fav city in Germany, never been to Magdeburg ever.
I've been to Cologne a few times, but probably have more to see. I've spent so much time in Germany that it does not feel too strange, but it is still different to the UK. Magdeburg has some nice places to check out, but I'm not sure how many tourists they get. We might not have visited if not for our child working at the university.

Traveling with train or plane is always an adventure. We luckily never missed flights, but did have our share of lost lugage. Concerning train rides, it feels that these are easier cancelled then flights. Last year, my wife had to go to England and an hour before departure, Eurostar just cancelled the ride. These systems are complex and a small thing can mess them up. With our Eurostar being stuck for hours there would have been others who couldn't get through and so trains would be in the wrong place. We were lucky we could still get to our destination that day.
I go to my office on a short train journey a couple of times each week. Today was the first day back and this evening it was chaos due to a broken rail. I managed to get home okay, but will have to see how it works out for the rest of the week. At least I'm not doing a long commute every day.

Travelling by train through Europe is on my list as well, but I'll leave it to when I'm more elderly and do it in a more leisurely way. The website you used looks good, I'll bear that in mind for future.
I've done my share of flying. One advantage of trains is that they tend to take you direct to a city centre so you have less hassle with transfers and airports can mean more waiting around. I enjoy seeing the world go past and I'm not in such a rush these days.

Well, i am glad you have made this post as i for a few months now have been looking into my next adventure abroad and my first solo adventure. It is really cool hearing about your eurostar experience, shame about the persons death that is not good and i send condolences to that family. other that that it seems the eurostar was very good. I had a breif look over christmas as I have been wanting to return to the Netherlands and also travel to Germany, the prices are not to bad.
for the netherlands especially I have been looking at the Harwich ferry as that goes over night to the hook of holland for a nice price. I will look into Byway as this is my first time hearing about this and the same for Interrail pass
from the photos it looks like you had an amazing first part of you're trip, im excited for part 2 of this :)
You should go for it. One of the kids travelled right across Europe on interrail. Byway were really helpful for us, but you can just book things directly.
Thanks for the encouragment and very cool to here. new to the holiday planning and solo travelling so just browsing around best sites and ways to book and seeing all loyalty programs etc.

I'm always a bit worried about trains and buses, thinking of delays and missed connections etc. I also dont like being with other people. But first class sounds like a good way to go for sure! When we were in India of course the first class trains were cheap as chips and the food was great. We may have to sell the Land Rover soon so I reckon if we want to do another trip I'm going to have to wrap my head around trains so this post was good to read. 300 km/h is quite decent speed. It took me around 7 hours to get from Prague to Graz, and it was just 500 km.
On the other hand, Czech trains offer extremely cheap refreshments on board :)
Some of the other trains were a lot slower. We do need these alternatives to flying.

European trains are more comfortable than ukrainians. And stylish. But they are often late, or cancelled, it makes the journey less scheduled or predictable. This is why I prefer plains. They are faster as well.
I am glad you have had a family reunion and good time on Christmas. And you avoided all those disasters 🙏
Planes can have delays too. You can see more from a train and we were in no hurry. At least we have the choice of how to travel. I would not want to drive all that way.

That must have been quite an interesting travel. All the way by train to Magdenburg.
Though I sometimes travel by train, I never took the Eurostart to the or back from the UK. Something I still want to do. Though flying for me is so much easier with an airport a little over 25 minutes public transport away from my doorstep. But it isn't the train experience. Still in my bucket list 🥳
I passed Magenburg a few times, but never got myself into the city. Would you say it is worth it?
We may go by car to Berlin in spring, when so, I pass the city. Easy for us to take an extra travel day and pay this city a visit. Reaosn for asking 😉
I can get to the Eurostar terminal in about an hour from home by train, so it's convenient. Getting to the nearest airport involves driving or more complex public transport. Then there's more waiting around there. We have done the flight to Berlin and train from there before.
Although we had these disruptions it did not ruin our trip or put us off taking the train.
Magdeburg is a nice little town. Local celebrities are scientist Otto von Guericke and Otto the Great. There's an impressive cathedral and other interesting buildings. It's just not on the scale of somewhere like Leipzig or Dresden.
For me it doesnt have to be that scale at all. I usually like the smaller cities/towns.
I think I will convince my passengers in spring time to spend a day in Magdeburg.
Maybe two, since I think it is possible to visit the VW factories. Supposedly super super super big! And just about a 100km away, and also kind enroute for us when we go by car.
