The Ghana List: June 2024

Introduction

You may have seen that I have been compiling the #BritList for nearly four years. I maintain a file of any Brits I find on Hive and then run a script that checks which of them are currently active. I have made the code available. I had been encouraging others to make their own lists, but so far only @michelmake has done this for the Netherlands.

I had some @hivesql queries to find people in various countries so I am adapting my scripts to use those. The first will be Ghana as it has enough users to be interesting, whilst still being manageable. There has to be some manual editing of the user list to group people by area and optionally set their location.

Ghana flag from Wikipedia

People seem to specify a few cities and regions on their profiles, so I have used those. I do not know much about the country, so please let me know if I get anything wrong. I have not checked all the profiles, so there may be cases where someone owns more than one. It is better to count people than accounts, so the list can handle that. I will leave it to the Ghanaian community to maintain the list. The scripts are fairly easy to use, but I can generate these posts if others maintain the lists of users.

I have added those people I found with a relevant location who have been active in the last year. There may be others who I did not find. I know of at least two who live in the UK, so I have put then under 'expats'.

I will look at doing some other countries soon.

People are listed as active if they have posted, commented or voted in the last month.

Commentary

I have met @mcsamm a few times and seen his posts about what has been going on in Ghana. The building of wells has done a lot to make Hive known and they have held some conferences. It looks like a few people joined recently. I suspect there are a lot more accounts, but I have not found them all.

The two dolphins are living in the UK. I expect that others may need to cash out some of their rewards to supplement their income. That is a case of Hive doing good for those who may struggle to get by.

Ghana has a population of over 34 million, so there is plenty of scope for growth.

I have not found any witnesses in Ghana yet. The script will detect them.

This is an interesting compilation which I believe will be useful for the community in pursuing growth.

Thank you so much Steeve.

You are welcome. I hope the list will keep on growing.

Interesting compilation, man. Seems like you found my alt/leo account (depressed.leo) but not my main account (this account). You missed a few people, but this is pretty accurate data. Great job, man.

I just used a few simple queries so I was bound to miss some. It needs a mix of scripts and manual work to compile these lists. I'm hoping that if I kick things off then others will take it up.

Branching out! Good show, I hope this is useful for the Ghana crew!

Me too. I'll look at automating more of the process so I can get others done. I really hope others will join in.

Things like this are great for creating that vibe and encouraging people to do so, so yeah, fingers crossed!

Wow that was an awesome research!!!

You just have to mine the data, but it needs people to complete the list.

of course, I thought about that how to find info, sometimes you need to go deep in the posts since people should mention it just in one post which region of the country they are from.

I just looked at profiles. Others can help add to the list.

I think you missed @senalove. She's been inactive for awhile.

Great list there. Thanks for the list.

Her location just says Africa, so that's why I missed her. The data is very inconsistent.

Do one for Romania when you have time. I am curious.

I can look into it. Do people use consistent location data on their profiles? Finding them is the first step and then generating the post is fairly simple.

Bucuresti - the capital, Constanta Cluj Iasi Timisoara Brasov Craiova Ploiesti Galati Oradea Buzau

Regions - Muntenia Moldova Transilvania

Is this helping?

(Edited)

There's only a few accounts I found outside Bucharest so it was not really worth splitting them up. As I said, others can work on that.

There's also the issue of whether to do it in local spelling. That's not for me to decide really.

Are you from Romania?

Thanks, man, it is fun to see it, and a bit disappointing to see we are so few.

There are probably more that my queries didn't find.

I know, I got used to the UK, we are quite a few on that list, isn't it?

I have about 800 in the UK file, but most are inactive. I keep finding more by various means, but that has been over several years. Some of that has been tip-offs from other Brits.

I think these lists have some value, so I will do more as I find time. So far I've only had one person take up their country (Netherlands). I'll keep doing it anyway.

Wow, I never would have guessed so many. I probably couldn't even tell you where Ghana is though!

You should look at what is going on there. This could be where Hive takes off.

I'll have to see what's up. I know we have seen a big boom from Venezuela and Nigeria, but most of that is through LikeTu and people are cashing out everything they make. I get it, but that's not the kind of growth we need.

I think it's still beneficial as we need more users even if they are not investing. If they don't then incomes will be limited. I think the big stakes are mainly in the US and Europe.

There will always be a 'dash for cash' and the community needs to decide where it's bad for Hive. It isn't just up to HW.

This is interesting. I didn't think we had lists like this on the blockchain but it's nice to see a list like this. Hopefully, like you said, some more can be done so other accounts are captured.

People can add location data on their profiles, but there are no standards. It needs manual work to check them.

What a work horse you are. Very interesting!

It's interesting for me too. Once I do the initial work it's easy to keep pumping these out, so I will do more.

This is an interesting job you are doing @steevc I would love to see a list of Nigerian hivers someday, and if there is a way I can help, please let me know.

It looks like there are at least 600 active Nigerians on Hive, so it's a much bigger job to sort them. I can look at compiling an initial list, but then it needs the local community to work on it.

Okay, great.
If you help us with the initial list I think we can take it from there.

Impressive work has been done. Thanks for helping to bring this out, @steevc . I am excited to see you bring this out after a good discussion during our last meetup. We will certainly work on getting things running from here.

Nice that you were able to pick all that up. I've been inactive (posting) for a while but I do pass through to read one or two things whenever I see a mention and sometimes attend physical events. You got me out of my shell, big ups

I hope people will get more events going near you. Meeting people in person makes it all more real.
