Termination Shock by Neal Stephenson
I have read a lot of books by Neal Stephenson. They tend to be quite geeky and that suits my tastes. This one came out a couple of years ago and it's very topical. It is set a few years in the future where the effects of climate change have become more extreme and are making normal life difficult for most of the world.
The story goes all over the world with a fairly large cast that includes some fictional royals. The number of people can make it a little hard to keep track of who they all are. It deals with different cultures and that helps to make it more interesting.
I do not want to reveal too much of the plot to avoid spoilers, but it does deal with geo-engineering. That is a controversial technology as the effects may be hard to predict and it may not benefit everyone. I literally just read this news story about how cleaning up the fuels used by shipping may have led to temperatures going up. That was not intended, but then mucy of what we are doing is a form of geo-enginerring. Putting various substances into the air, water and soil is likely to have effects.
The book includes a lot of current technology such as drones. Previously he has changed names of things like operating systems, but this time he mentions some actual products. This could make it seem dated in a few years, but then it feels so current now.
If you enjoy books like The Martian (I did) then you may like this too. He may not paint the best characters, but he tells a good story. The action rolls along nicely over 700 pages. It has taken me av while to get through, but it was satisfying.

Wow that's a good book right there, The book sounds very very intriguing. I'm always up for a good story, especially one that explores relevant issues like climate change. The mix of technology and real-world concerns seems like a compelling read. Great choice Steve

I might have to check out the books, sounds a bit Kim Stanley Robinson, maybe?
I'm not sure I've read those. I tend to follow a few authors and don't get through as many books as I'd like.

Oooh, I have to take a look at this! I loved Athaneum... And the Baroque saga. Totally nerdy stuff, but really engaging and interesting!
This has a similar feeling to Seveneves. I think his next will be part of a series. He does write long books.
Oh my, 700 pages! That would take me half a year to get through it! I'm the worst slow reader in the world! It sounds interesting though.

Thats a pretty long read - 700 pages! But at least you found it a compelling read, A good story teller makes reading easy! You can just gobble it up with your eyes!
His books are generally long, so I'm used to it. The problem is that it takes me a while to get through a book, so I need to remember what happened earlier. My next read is a series of short stories, so it may be easier
Yeah you kinda loose pace, too much happening. I gobbled up some nice books on holiday. But I also read to my daughter everyday, the novel type kids books, so I land up reading at least 2 books at a time. So it takes me linger to finish and I often re read chapters lol.
I'm just finishing up Heinlein's Friday. This sounds right up my alley.
Is it just me, or does every dystopian book you read lately remind you of the current times we're living in?
IDK, I've been reading a lot of dystopian fiction lately, and it almost all reminds me of the current era we're in right now.
This one was written recently, so that helps it be current, but a lot of older stuff seems relevant. I just heard on the radio that some scientists say we have 5 years to fix the climate. Bowie was right!
