On the Bench
I am a big fan of crowd-sourced data as it tends to mean that the data is made freely available. Years ago I made some contributions to OpenStreetMap that aims to map the world. That was started as the UK maps made by the government-funded Ordnance Survey had restrictive copyright. It has expanded to cover the world and people can add whatever details they want to it.
There is a guy called Terence Eden who I first met some years ago at a conference and then again last year at Bar Camp London. He is very into such projects. He started Open Benches which logs memorial benches. Actually the benches tend to get mapped by OpenStreetMap, but they do not capture the details written on them.
I had been thinking of contributing to this project for a while. I was recently in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in the north of England where they seem to have a lot of such benches that were not on the site, so I decided to rectify that. The process involves taking some photos. The important part is to capture the actual plaques, but you can have others photos of the whole bench and the view.
I have learnt from this initial experience that you need to be thorough in detailing exactly where each bench is. If you set your camera or phone to record the GPS coordinates in the file then the site will use those, but the accuracy is limited. It may be worth taking a series of photos and use a standard sequence, e.g. long view, close-up, view.
When you upload the close-up the site will try to read the writing. In some cases it does a very good job of this, but it will depend on the lighting, the font and the condition of the plaque.
The site design is basic, but functional. It uses OpenStreetMap with some different rendering options.
You can submit anonymously or log in via various services such as Github and Twitter. If you do log in then you can see all your submissions. Here are mine so far. Some people have done thousands, so I have some catching up to do. I would have done more on my trip, but my other half would have got annoyed at me. I will look to do more in my local area and me more meticulous in recording the details. This may be something I can do when out running, but I will check my routes to see if anyone has already covered the area.
Terence is active on Mastodon and the site publishes new submissions there. Mine have already appeared.
I am sure some people are thinking that this is the sort of project that Hive could handle. I do not think Terence is a particular fan of blockchain, so he will probably not be looking to move here, but there may be similar projects that could start here. Maybe someone wants to log all the bus stops in the world with details of where you can go from them. I think you need to build a dedicated front end for such projects to make it usable, but you have to start somewhere. Of course we have Pinmapple that links posts to locations, so the potential is there.
This is a very interesting project. Just checked my local little town, we have over 100 benches on it!! I remember seeing something similar previously for something else, but I can't remember what item it was. It's very frustrating, been sitting here for 5 minute racking my brains already 😩
Pinmapple could definitely be used for this, but the tag search functions isn't working at the moment. Another frustration which I've been trying to get resolved ...
There are not many benches logged around home, so I will look for some. I think Pinmapple is cool and I hope it keeps improving.
Interesting, we got loads of benches in the central park in town and few more along the river Ouse.
Are you in Bedford? I know there is one for the guy who ran the music shop in the park. There is actually one for my mother in law at the bus station. There were just so many up north where we were over new year. Those would keep me busy for a while. I'll be back up there some time anyway.
Yes, I am in Bedford. If you come by give me a shout.
I'd like to get involved with some meetups this year. We could do one in Bedford. Even if it's just a couple of us it can be worthwhile. I am over that way fairly often anyway.
sure, i am up to it.
I love this concept! The idea of showing all the bus stops and where you can go from them is a fairly good idea too. Google can sometimes do that but I find it sometimes is not reliable or doesn't give me the route I am after!
Bus stops were just something that popped into my head, but there are lots of things we can do with location. Once the data is on the blockchain you can do what you want with it.
Fun project, never hear of it before. I like the view from the Georgie bench you contributed. Especially with the sun in it! Some more extensive features via Pinmapple is a really good idea!
These benches are in a nice spot, if the weather is good. Pinmapple uses data on the blockchain, so we could do other things like that.
That's pretty cool. Kind of makes me think of pinmapple that we have here on Hive. It's amazing the number of people that have contributed to that community. I have a quite robust map of posts myself.
Pinmapple does some similar things. All the data for that is on the blockchain, so anyone could use it. I think there are lots of possible applications like that.
Is that still needed since Google Maps, Apple Maps and TomTom have already covered most of the planet by now? I suppose those all have intellectual property issues.
It's like the difference between Wikipedia and Encarta (or whatever). Having data with an open licence provides more possibilities. We don't want companies to control everything.
I’ve come across this site before, really love the project. Found some benches I know of on it and some i didn’t. I want to factor them into some upcoming walks.
Anyone could add to this. Maybe a few Hivers will contribute now.
I reckon there are benches in our village that aren’t on there?
There's an opportunity for you. I've not noticed plaques on the benches around here, but I'll have another look.
There’s one I often park my bum on when taking a long walk, it has a great view of Reading down in the valley and the Chilterns behind the town
No hay nada que me guste más en el mundo que la geografía nos permite ubicarnos en tiempo y espacio..
It does matter. People need free access to that data. I think we can build mapping apps on Hive.
This project is a nice one. There are a lot golf benches in my area too…
This is actually really amzing and such an interesting way to record these fine details. It would also be interesting if someone were to make such a map via #hive tho no idea how it'd be done, but it'd be fun to contribute. As we move closer to every finite detail of the 'real world' being mapped for the virtual, it's interesting to consider it's ultimate use.
Thanks for sharing this @steevc
We could build maps as Pinmapple does with some metadata in the posts, but it needs something to collect and display it. I think this is an ideal use of blockchain rather than using a centralised database. I may look into how it could work.
A potential deeper layer would be to link to their obituary or personal blog or social. A heavier lift, but I'm now curious about Ronald and Robert Mutton.
Something like that would be another way of extending their legacy.
That might be possible so people could know more about them. I wonder if future plaques will include a URL.
Or maybe QR codes?
