Newport, not the Welsh one
During our stay in Providence we took a ferry to Newport, also in Rhode Island. This town also has a lot of history. It was a naval base and hosted the first US Open competitions for golf and tennis. It has also been a base for the America's Cup sailing race.
Shipping and boats are still big things there. We passed at least one lighthouse.
As well as a huge bridge that was built so big naval ships could pass under.
We even saw some new boats that may have been shipped over from the Netherlands.
As we did not have a car we took a 'trolley' bus tour. This was a stop by a field where a lot of kite flying goes on and there is a memorial to Portuguese explorers.
Newport has been a popular vacation spot for the rich of New York and elsewhere. They built what they refer to as 'cottages', but they are more like our British stately homes. Now they are owned by people such as Larry Ellison (founder of Oracle), Jay Leno and Judge Judy. Those were some our guide pointed out.
This house used to be used by the commander of the naval base, but President Eisenhower took it over as his summer White House.
We had tickets to visit The Breakers which was built by Conelius Vanderbilt II.
This place is extreme opulence and was to show off his wealth. Marble was shipped over from Europe. How is this for a music room? When you are that rich you can do what you want, but I can think of better things to spend the money on.
We all need a little terrace where we can look out to sea.
Back in town we ran into another JFK location. We had already seen where he proposed to Jackie in Boston and where the family spent vacations in Hyannis, Cape Cod. They got married in Newport.
Dinner was on the harbour with the obligatory lobster dishes.
We could have hired some transport. These little three-wheelers seemed popular. I think they had little 2-stroke engines.
Rhode Island is a tiny state, but has plenty to offer, especially if you like being on the water.
When we got back to Providence there was a roller disco going on in the park by the hotel.
We were to leave for New York the next day, but that will wait for another post.

Opulence galore here and coupled to history makes a certain drawcard for tourists.
I like the photo of that rockstar with his backpack !LOL

Wherever there are rich people there will be others offering them spending opportunities. It seems there was some snobbery about 'old' and 'new' money around there. Now we have a new wave of rich people from technology and entertainment.
I don't need a palace to feel fortunate.

We have a situation here where the old money is leaving the country. The parents die and the children and the children have emigrated to other countries, so the money goes with them. The Techies are now big money earners and soon it will all be new money.
That was meant to be a compliment.

People with money can live where they want, but there is potential to earn wherever you are. I hope that people can find reasons to stay in South Africa.
It is a very delicate situation here my friend, amongst dire situations of unemployment and it's a long story. Most of our skilled people are leaving the country.

.Absolute gorgeous locations! I haven't been back there in years. One of these days I'll make it back there again!
I don't suppose it's cheap to live there, but you could have a nice life if you can afford it.
Too bad it so pricey, it would be a great place to live!
I was totally going to say welcome to Oregon then I realized you're on the east coast. I wasn't aware that we had a Newport on the East Coast but it does make sense.
Awesome post thank you very much for sharing the views of the East Coast seaboard!
Ah, there are others. I've not been to Oregon yet. This trip was just on the east side of the continent.

Did you guys get to see the old stone mill in the center of one of the parks in town? I still have pictures of that from when I was a kid. I remember the cliffwalks fondly too. My dad was stationed in Newport when he was in the navy, so that was one of our stops when we camped out that way. He took us to his favorite restaurant that was still open surprisingly. It was a very memorable trip. I remember the cobblestone streets near the harbor downtown too.
We saw the old ruin from the bus. The driver said it was uncertain what it had actually been. A walk along the cliffs would have been nice, but we had limited time. Mind you, we did so much walking on this trip. Google says we walked about 90 miles last month.
Wow, that is pretty impressive. Yeah, I feel like every other year they change what they think it was. There is another one that my dad took us to when we went there, but that one is in an off the grid place and I remember it was filled with broken beer bottles so we didn't stay long.
These walks are very beautiful. Visiting a place with scenic views makes one very happy and I would definitely like to visit this place once in my life.
I would love to have a music room like this in my house. With the size of the place I am already satisfied😀
That place is just ridiculous. I don't even aspire to such things as nobody need all that fancy decoration. I'm happy enough having a space at home to make music.
Looks amazing. I love the whole New England area. Especially Boston.
