Monday Drumday: Folking it up, with a drum solo!
At the start of this year a new band was formed from members of our local jamming community. It is actually a very similar lineup to our Swing 42 jazz band, but this time we are going for a more folky vibe with elements of bands such as The Waterboys and Bellowhead. We have a few Hivers in the band with @daniellemurray on clarinet and recorders, @purplesinger on piano, @anna-newkey on guitar plus Bob on flute, Ray on guitar, Anne-Marie on guitar and flute, and Paul on electric bass. With COVID an other issues we have not always had everyone together, but seven of were there for rehearsal on Sunday. Anne-Marie had flown over from Ireland to be with us and it is always great to have her wonderful voice.
We took it in turns to pick a song with several people taking lead vocals. I did a couple that are fairly new to me and very wordy. It may take me a while to learn all the lyrics. I was managing to play some basic drum beats whilst singing.
At some point someone requested a drum solo, so I had to oblige. It is nothing to fancy and uses a few fills I have been learning on Drumeo. My Yamaha DD-65 is very portable, but has limited sensitivity and sounds. I use a proper kick pedal for the bass drum and so it at least feels something like a proper kit.
We are putting together a set of songs that would allow us to play some gigs. There are some local festivals we could apply for. I am contemplating getting a small acoustic drum kit for when we do have play some shows.
A full rock kit would be over the top for this band. They can be a pain to transport and set up, but there are some more compact options. Some people build a kit around a suitcase that acts as the bass drum, but you really need a snare and some cymbals.
You can also buy ready-made kits that fold up quite small. I like the look of this one and I have seen some on ebay that are not too expensive. I shall keep an eye out for something local.
Rock on!
I learn music lyrics easily
I guess it is because I love to listen to music all the time...
I know the words to lots of songs, but I need to listen to these a lot more to get them in my head.
Awesome, and the fact that there are many Hiveians, there are none of us with 60 miles minimum anyway @shanibeer is onto it though :) I love a good drum solo, like Cam in Modern Family, Tommy Lee in Motley Crew and the list never end Lars Ulrich, Joe Miceli...
I brought these people to Hive and they found a nice music community. I don't rank myself as a great drummer, but I'm having fun. It's mostly about backing the band, but you get some chances to show off. We have a great set of musicians.

I did wonder, i've tried to do the same...one who was active for a bit, then nothing, shame. It's about experiences and how they make you feel, if something comes of it embrace it or don't :) they do sound a great supportive bunch.
We all met through music and have a great community. I hope a few more will join Hive eventually. I think it has something for everyone.
That's good to hear, and yes it does, the challenge around me is that many aren't in the place to move away from 9-5 sadly.
I'm still on the 9-5 grind, but I can do Hive too for fun.
oh, do you enjoy it or is it a means to an end?
You mean Hive? I like social media and Hive is the best version of it I've found. I don't have any brand to promote for now, but I enjoy the community and I want others to get the benefits.
It won't pay the bills for me, yet, so I need the day job.
No the 9-5, Hive is a superb platform the rewards so many things, it can be challenging at the start to get the recognition however it comes with consistency.
I've put a lot of hours into Hive, but the hourly rate is not great. My job is not too bad really and it pays better.
It will get interesting if $HIVE goes to a few dollars. People have lived off it where costs are low.
Us too, I enjoy writing for this far more than our website, it’s not just the rewards either- it’s the engagement and community spirit, it certainly will😀
Glad to hear it. We need to keep building the community. I know people are getting fed up with some other platforms, but most have never heard of Hive.
I ought to look at more of your posts, especially as we plan to get an EV sometime. I'm just not finding the time.

I thought you did brilliantly both singing and playing Steve. Drumming isn't as easy as it looks, especially whilst singing soooo many lyrics at the same time.
Cheers. I find you need to get to a stage where the instrument playing can go on automatic so you can sing too. It is amazing what our brains can handle. I'll keep working on those songs and I tripped over a few lines.

.I hope you are not neglecting your guitar lessons?
I still play the guitar, but I'm not doing lessons on that for now. I've done 40+ years of guitar, but only about one of drums, so I have some catching up to do.
Wow just Wow, how easily he was using the sticks on the drums and plates. Looks like a piece of cake for him :P
Wow, it sounds like you have quit the ensemble gathering together there! I look forward to hearing more about your gigs.
We have recordings of the band, but it's too early to release those as they are still works in progress. Stay tuned...
The way we see how long you've been working hard and you're playing it so much better now. I know it is not easy because I have a friend who is also very keen and he is also learning it.
I like to track my progress and you only get better by actually playing. I hope your friend keeps it up too.
Yeah practice makes man perfect.
You're really improving fast -- it's great to see and hear!
Cheers. I'm enjoying it and the band is a great opportunity to improve.
