Monday Drum Day: Getting funky

avatar

I have not done one of these for a few weeks, so it is long overdue. Every month the Drumeo drum school put together a collaboration video of students playing a song. I have done a few of these, but do not always get it done. For July the song is Funky Town by Lipps Inc. that came out in 1980.

The drumming is pretty simple, but as it is an extended mix it is an endurance test. There were some fiddly bits that I skipped, but I had to do the drum breaks. The backing on the introduction is fairly quiet, so I was watching the moving music notation to try and keep in sync. I only had to adjust slightly when the actual tune came in.

I had a few stumbles, but made it to the end. I could not have gone on much longer anyway. I have no idea how many hits on cymbals and drums it involves.

I need to do more drumming to build my stamina. There have been a couple of long lessons on Drumeo recently. One was an hour of just keeping a beat with Greg Bissonette and there was a half hour of rock beats with one of the main teachers. Those were not quite as quick as this.

I also need to keep working on @theriverkicks set for our festival gig next month. That should be fun, but I am slightly nervous. I hope we can get a few more gigs just to get out and play together. One of our musicians @anna-newkey is recovering from a broken arm after coming off her bike. @daniellemurray and @purplesinger are in the band too.

There are a few other drummers on Hive, so check them out too. I have included some of their posts in this community.

Rock on!

I enjoyed the drumming beats. You seem to have mastered this art. Music couldnt be complete without drums. Such a great setup too. I wish I can play drums, does it take a lot to learn?

I've definitely not mastered it. The basics are fairly easy, by there is always more to learn. It helps to have a good teacher. My education has all been online so far.

Impressive. I would love to pick of one of many creative skills. Makes sense to know how to do quite some of these things that somehow adds value to life.

That is a hard one there Steve. Well done though. I don't think I'd have enough patience for those bits in the middle.

It's a challenge, but a lot of drumming is just about keeping the beat going. It can still be fun.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I've been picking my guitar back up a bit this Summer.

Dang, an hour straight? That is nuts! I guess if you are in a band and want to play shows though, you need that consistency and stamina.

The hour lesson was actually fun from the way it was done. Playing a full show has to be hard work, but it's a specific type of fitness.

You actually put some kind of pressure in it
Nice one, Steve

An hour of drumming is pretty strenuous. Imagine what it must have been like for all those bands playing for 2 hours a night every night for months on end.
Drummers not only keep the beat they determine the groove. Keep it funky dude. 🎶👍🏼

My band will only be playing for 45 minutes, so I hope I can manage that. It's a full body workout.

Cheers. I keep saying I need to play more whole songs. That's what music is about.
