The News

This morning I saw messages popping up in my Ecency Decks Waves feed about a fake airdrop in the @leofinance Discord.

Scam!

I had a look and found this in the announcements, apparently from an established member of the community. It looks like his Discord account was hacked and that is very worrying when it happens to a channel admin. I did not click the link, but it seems the site actually used Ethereum wallets. The mention of 'eth/gas' should raise suspicions as those are irrelevant to $LEO.

Discord

This hacked account was assisting people in logging in so they could be ripped off. I caught this message that was swiftly deleted by the crooks. Many people were kicked from the channel. I did DM some people who were chatting there to alert them. I expect others did the same. Other channels put up warnings. I might have expected to see more posts about this on Hive. I shared one I found to get the word out. If you see something like this with no posts from the project then you should be suspicious. There are genuine airdrops, but those will be well advertised and there will probably be conditions. If it looks like you need to dash to get some then it may be dodgy. Greed can be costly.

According to @ssebasv around $1300 of funds were taken before the channel shut down.

@bozz had some thoughts on how this could damage the reputation of the project. There will be some bad feeling from those who lost funds. @taskmaster4450 wonders if people will look to using Web3 alternatives for such discussion as they are more secure, but will they give up on the big platforms?

Prices

I ran my usual price check using @coingecko, looking back 90 days this time. $HIVE is falling gradually, but not drastically. Yesterday's #HPUD may make little difference to that as it will take $millions of trading to shift it significantly.

Friday Follows

Those mentioned get a share of the post rewards.

Communities

  • I would like to get an electric car and Hive has a place for those.
  • The urban exploration community is popular for those who like to investigate abandoned buildings.

Hive Sites

  • There are various ways to see what transactions are on the Hive blockchain, but Hive is Beautiful is one of the most fun. You see a group of circle appear for each block with an indication of what they are for. Splinterlands and Hive-Engine dominate, but there are lots of others dapps.
  • HiveSQL allows you to run database queries on the Hive data. You can use it to generate charts or just to find users.
  • HiveStats gives you lots of details of an account.

The End

I will be generating the latest #BritList tomorrow and I hope to see the numbers improve. It only needs one comment or vote for an account to be shown as active on there, so give your friends a nudge to log on. Even if they are not using their accounts they could set up automatic votes to earn something.

Have a great weekend.

That's strange, this hack, because Leofinance Discord have an additional level of security, higher level than any other Hive community...

What extra security do they have? Whatever it was got broken. These crooks were organised as they set up a site and then had someone guiding users on how to lose their money as well as kicking out anyone who raised the alarm. I would hope anyone with a big wallet would be more careful.

I don't hang out on that channel every day. Crooks don't care what people think of them and will exploit both insecurity and greed.

That's actually not entirely accurate. Leo has a lot of exposure on ETH, BSC, and Polygon with their DeFi projects (CUB/POLYCUB). In the early days of Leo they had a WETH token that was quite active. It's good that not a lot of money was taken, but I have a feeling it was from a lot of smaller accounts, so that $1300 could have a much bigger impact that it feels like for those of us in more developed countries.

I don't keep up with all the DeFi stuff and barely use $ETH, so I was not aware of that. It just seemed odd when the original airdrop was $LEO. Later they mentioned giving $ETH too. I doubt they care about Hive anyway.

No, they probably don't. Like I said though, for those who follow the community closely, it wasn't that far of a stretch. As I said in my post, I did click the link because it seemed plausible, I'm just glad I didn't do anything beyond that.

I'm more likely to believe news that comes via a trusted Hive account :)

That sucks about the Discord hack. I hope there weren't a lot of people who fell victim to it. People get excited about airdrops, and considering where they discovered the post, I'm sure a few people jumped right in :(

The lack of update on Hive made it seem dodgy. They even timed it so the team would be asleep. They obviously did some research to appeal to the Leo fans. Is this Hive going mainstream?

Thank you 😁 they were little sweethearts. When they say never work with kids and animals, I agree with the kids bit! Lol but I love my job working with and for bulldogs. Better than accountancy any day lol (my previous life 🤣)

My brothers Binance account was compromised because of this, I have asked him to change the password, changing password is enough or not?

I would hope so, but I don't use Binance.

Thank you so much for the mention! 🐾🐾 😁 only a few more weeks on puppy duty, then I can get back to woodturning 😃
Speaking of hacking, someone has been trying to hack into my Wirex account! Luckily I set up extra verifications so was alerted and have closed the account down completely. I never actually used it so didn’t need it. I thought it best just to shut it down, rather than someone rip me off. I hate technology! 😂

I've not had issues with Wirex, but I don't use it much. It's there for when I want to exchange cash and crypto. We need options for that.

First I've heard of it - so much Leo shill then radio silence when something bad happens! Not great!

They need to own up to their mistakes and learn from them. If Discord is not secure then they should consider other options as people lost money from this incident.
