The News

Not much to report on the prices. $HIVE is hovering around 1000 Satoshis, but that means it has gained some value recently. 'The other coin' still refuses to die, but a few people keep milking it.

Prices

I sometimes post my Wordle results on Threads and someone asked me if there was some version that paid crypto. That reminded me of Kryptogamers. They have various games that include some casino gambling ones. I had not looked it in a while. I am not sure what you can win, but it could be another way to earn.

Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX has been found guilty of various financial crimes. I have not read all the details of this case, but it seems he was not so interested in the uses of crypto, but just about the money to be made from it. I think that is actually a common way of thinking. It can lead to a lot of negative press for what could be a useful technology.

In better news the Hive borehole project have opened more water supplies in Ghana. That is the sort of publicity we need. @mcsamm and @collinz are driving this project.

Mastodon for Dummies

I heard about this book and it is real. Mastodon has grown massively, especially thanks to the chaos on Twitter. That gets the attention of publishers who see a market for a book. That growth seems to have happened largely from word of mouth and without a marketing organisation. I wonder why Hive cannot do something similar. It is down to each of us to spread the word about it.

Friday Follows

I have done these posts most weeks since I joined this blockchain over seven years ago. I hope it has some value, but if I can get good people more followers then is it worth it. I usually spread some of the post rewards.

  • @oripenalver just posted in the Drumming community. She has played with lots of groups in Venezuela and just joined an all female rock group.
  • @beanz is one of the Hive old guard, but she has not been active recently. It is good to see her back.
  • @bleepcoin is also back with stories of his childhood as a Brit in LA. I met him some time ago at some London events.
  • @edje had some ideas about how Hive could provide a forum for a music site. Actually it could be integrated into all sorts of sites. It would remove the need to host all the data. There may already be tools to embed Hive.

Events

The End

I shall be running the script for my monthly #BritList post tomorrow. I fear that numbers will be down again. If you have any friends who have stopped using their Hive accounts then perhaps you can drop a hint that it could be worth revisiting the platform. Even if they just follow a voting trail it can earn them something and help spread the rewards.

Enjoy your weekend and Hive five!

That book is a cool idea. I know a lot of people have written posts on Hive about how to use Hive, but we kind of need something outside of Hive that will grab people's attention and maybe bring them in. It would take a lot of work, but I think if we crowd sourced it we could come up with something great.

We have a fair few writers here, but it takes some work to put a whole book together. I think we need to get Hive better known first, but more tutorials are always useful.

I don't think any one person needs to take it on though. You could split it up in to chapters and have each group or individual tackle one. I don't think it would take too long to put something together that way.

Hive have a lot of potential when I got back here feels human to engage and other platforms feels weird and automatics.

Hmm
Writing a book about Hive can actually help to create awareness aside from promoting Hive on normal social networks

I know we've had this conversation so many times it has now gone past boring and descended into the realms of painful, but here are some thoughts to sit and think about.

    1. What is it that makes you prefer Hive over all the other platforms, some of which you really should be at home with, given your OpenSource background?"

Never mind what you think other people might like; we're often very wrong in what we presume others like, so I understand the incredulity of why everyone isn't flocking to Hive.
    2. How many Whales or Dolphins leave Hive? I suspect there might be one or two Dolphins, but in the main, very few of the top-tier levels leave, so maybe that's what needs to be addressed.

      a. Is the bar too high in terms of level progression?
      b. Is there just not enough Dolphins to go around in terms of supporting minnows?
      c. Is the vast majority of Hive far more interested in following Dolphins or Whales rather than following Minnows or even Krill, for that matter?
    3. Is it possible Hive will never grow to any great size because it is associated with Crypto, which, like it or not, the vast majority of the planet seems to despise with a vengeance, including a good proportion of the FOSS community! Which even I find incredible.
    4. I doubt a 'Book' will be of much value, but hey, it can't hurt can it?
@ecency #waves has kind of reignited my interest in Hive, but I find I struggle to devote any time, even to that! This actually does upset me because I have managed to find a small group of friends there. See, I think all these projects hosted on Hive, games, blogging, etc., are all very well and good, but nobody seems to have sat down and thought out why, for example, someone would prefer to use Hive over Youtube other than 'principles' when sadly there are a lot of people out there who couldn't give a damn about principles, and it's certainly not about rewards either because that's a huge wake-up call once you start using Hive. All the promises of "Getting paid for what you do" either fade into dust or, for a lot of users, the rewards do not reflect the time and effort they have put in, so I suspect a lot of folks, like myself, think "I'm not really earning anything on Hive so I might as well go back to Twitter where at least all my friends are."

I don't have the answers; what I do have is my view of what I think is wrong. Others, of course, are free to disagree with what I've said and have their own opinion. 🤷‍♂️

I don't have all the answers either. I just think that Hive could be considered as an alternative to the corporate platforms that are getting worse. FB bombards you with ads and 'suggestions' so you can hardly find the stuff you actually want. Twtr has got worse since that idiot was forced to buy it. I don't use any others.

I do like Mastodon and there are lots of cool people there. There are also lots of cool people on Hive, but on a smaller scale. Hive is open source and anyone can contribute to running the infrastructure, so it ticks those boxes for me. I'm not rushing to join other platforms as I waste enough time online as it is.

People who have come to Hive will have various reasons. Of course many are attracted by the 'free money' and that could make a difference when they only make a few bucks per week from their regular job. For the likes of us it may just be beer/coffee money. The 'freedom' seekers will be a tiny minority. There are millions out there dealing in crypto, but most are driven by greed rather than principles. Hive seems a more natural home for them than Twtr and reddit, but it's a numbers game and they go where the community is.

It can be cliquey, but so are other platforms. People will hang out with those they know. There can be a tendency to support others with a big stake, but if Hive should grow then maybe that will be less of a factor. The actual 'levels' have no real meaning, but it's a way to track user numbers. I have been keeping an eye on the number with over 100k HP and that is slowly growing. These people must have some faith in Hive doing well, but it won't if they drive others away.

I do see a fair few people from the open source world on Mastodon saying crypto is crap, but they will also say AI/ML is crap. They like to express their opinions, but they are not representative of the general population who will not have strong opinions on these things. They won't care about open source/standards either. Crypto gets plenty of bad press and that's what you tend to see. Hive is not perfect, but it does not have some of the faults that are often mentioned about crypto. Beware of taking the opinions of your 'bubble' as gospel.

I don't see why Hive shouldn't be at least as big as Mastodon. Both are geeky and lack marketing. There may be some overlap in who uses them.

I am about to run my #BritList and I expect numbers to be down. However user numbers are growing in places like Venezuela, Cuba, Nigeria and Ghana.

I'm very aware of the issues after all these years and we should discuss them. But I'm still having fun and that matters to me.

A person should not be trusted at all about FTX, because once a person is deceived, he should never be deceived again. If a person does this, then a person is not wise.

I’m torn these days to the point I’m struggling with the online world, writing and making the content I used to enjoy putting together feels like a chore. Instead I’m just playing around with music and pushing it to SoundCloud etc.

I’ve been trying to develop a newsletter on Substack but struggling with that too. I’ve one paying subscriber.

Motivation is a struggle.

However I am pleased to see my hive earnings have gained value due to the rise in its price.

You have to decide what is worth your time. I have run my own blog before, but got few readers. I get a lot more responses on here as well as the rewards. Hive is a habit for me :)

I feel that maybe my best bet is to spend less time online but more on here, as there is something of a maker space about Hive.
