The News
The big news in the cryptosphere is that Coinbase got hacked. I saw it reported by @mrosenquist and also by the SEC. This does not seem to compromise funds, but they have leaked personal information of users, including ID images. It may have been an inside job. Any company that is holding such data needs to be really careful and it looks like their systems were not secure enough. People are often the weak point.
Bitcoin went up a little this week and other coins followed. $HIVE is doing slightly better now, but is a long way off previous highs. It ranks around 400th on Coingecko and 300th on CoinMarketCap. You can upvote it on both of those.
I often think about why Hive is not getting adopted more. We know it works and that it can be fun, but negative images of cryptocurrency can hold us back. We need to be able to counter that. Here are some points that come to mind:
- Blockchain is wasteful! Well some of them consume huge amounts of power. Hive does not since each witness node can be fairly low powered as it is not doing proof of work. Our witnesses are picked by the community and so those who bring value ought to do well. Yes, I know that a few accounts have a lot of control, but many others are growing and spreading the vote.
- Cryptocurrencies are Ponzi schemes! Those who say this may not understand what a Ponzi scheme is or how cryptocurrencies work. In the case of Hive you do not have to buy anything to get started, although there may be a small cost to getting the account to start with (with free options). Anyone has the potential to earn something.
- Blockchains have no real applications! I have been on plenty of centralised platforms that were shut down by the owning companies. Google have a bad record for this. Some people think the Fediverse offers a solution, but you will still depend on someone running a server unless you have the resources to host an instance yourself. A blockchain does not have this single point of failure. Hive has hundreds of witnesses, although a fair few are no longer active. As long as we have some the data is safe. We do need some nodes as well to serve the data, but there is redundancy there too. A blockchain offers certainty in identity too as it is not possible to pose as someone else unless you can get control of their keys. We get impersonation accounts, but you can see from their history if they are real.
Hive is not perfect, but it offers an alternative to corporate platforms that can censor you. How you counter anti-crypto opinions?

- @louis88 works on tools for Hive and implemented a way to show 'KE' shores in PeakD. This indicates if a person is taking out most of their earnings. Since then @peakd have added it to the profile page.
- @risingstargame has a list of tutorials. The game has expanded a lot and new players will need some help.
- I was recently part of a discussion with @hivetoday on how Hive can benefit musicians. The recording is out now. The hosts were @buttcoins and @shadowspub with @ravenmus1c and @meno (him again) as fellow guests.

If you are spamming comments around Hive then you are likely to get downvoted and/or muted, so your rubbish will not be seen. We have quite good mechanisms for dealing with abuse so to continue is a waste of effort. It seems that some people never get the message...

I cannot keep up with all the developments, but I monitor the feeds and see what @gadrian puts in his weekly reports. We need to share the news around and highlight the users who are creating valuable content, especially if they are underappreciated. Each of us can do something to make Hive better.

The funny thing is that Bitcoin is not really proof of work any longer, all the extremists do is to stack it haha...
Hive on the other hand is real proof of work all the way, you gotta provide content that people enjoy!
Monero then also is kinda proof of work, since its the only really free market that exists... Hive has the potential for that of course, we'll have to see how the last leg of this cycle unfolds.
I've invested a lot of time in Hive. I still find it fun and some day I may spend some more rewards.

I think it was less of a hack and more of an outright theft. The people who got them the data for money are willing accomplices. More a case of corporate espionage. The offending group just happens to be a bit more nefarious than usual.
The system shouldn't allow mass extraction of sensitive information without authorisation. So it was a system failure.
I'm glad the KE ratio is shown in Peakd. Yes, it is just a piece of information, but it still helps me spreading my votes :)
The reputation score on its own was not that useful. I don't necessarily check on what people do with their rewards if their content and comments are good.
Also, a high reputation doesn't necessarily imply that you publish great stuff.

Yeah, I was looking at possibly adding Coinbase to my options list, but not too sure about that now, lol. I haven't used the platform in years at this point myself though.

It's my pleasure. You're doing a great job.
The Coinbase hack was deeply concerning and a good argument against KYC. It's usually worse than the "hackee" claims it is and I think that's probably the case here. I was listening to the JRE podcast (#2311 with Jeremie & Edouard Harris) and they were discussing how these types of "hacks" play out—often times they're state-sponsored. Adversaries are constantly testing to find weak points until they find something they can exploit. I think we're seeing an end to pure system hacks and a move to more sophisticated "hybrid" forms of hacks where employees/contractors are compromised instead of or in addition to a good old-fashioned system hack.
As someone who's been in this ecosystem almost nine years I think Hive is healthy, overall, in 2025. Us old-timers remember when post payouts could nearly pay mortgage payments. Hive is definitely not that lucrative anymore but compared to other platforms, like Medium for example, it's infinitely better. I monetized on Medium a few months ago and have made a whopping $.33 in revenue for about twenty original articles. Here, I consistently average between $8 to $12 for each post payout and if you utilize the HBD staking you're receiving 15% APR on what you make. Not a bad deal at all.
Some people who've been here for a while and are worried about how little they make here need only venture out and try other platforms to help put things into proper perspective. Hive, historically, hasn't been a place that helps sell books for me. During my recent book launch only one presale originated from this platform. It is what it is though, I sell my books through other channels. Hive has been a wonderful creative incubator for me, the best I've found, bar none. I develop my ideas and content for books here and get paid for it. Hive revenue helps pay for the publishing costs. During the first few years everyone was dreaming of "mass adoption" for this platform but sometimes the best prayers are the unanswered ones. I agree that slow, organic, growth makes the most sense. Our biggest hurdle is public education.
I'm sure such systems are under constant attack and I don't envy the security teams.
I will always say that anyone can earn something on Hive, but it may not be a lot. I remember $10k posts when I was making nothing. In the early days it was harder to hit the threshold to pay out. I do okay now and can give out nice votes.
I've bought a fair few books and much from Hive people. It is a fairly small audience though. If we had millions of active users it would be a different place. I think we have a better chance by focusing on niche communities for now. There are some hubs of activity in various places, but not many active Hivers where I am.

Hive is ever-evolving, the content creator demographics shift as token prices fluctuate. I'm noticing way less active users from North America/Europe in my feed this past year. I'm not sure if this is just my own perception or not. It seems as token prices drop the user base shifts to countries where post payouts can still move the budgetary needle in the right direction.
I've purchased a lot too throughout the years. I remember that eBay clone (the name of which escapes me) that was once on the Steem blockchain. I think that marketplace fizzled out after a few years.
We each have to decide what is worth our time. I enjoy Hive and so keep coming back. I have seen a lot of people getting local businesses to take crypto and that has to be good for Hive. I am just not sure how it would work here.
One hundred percent. I still enjoy it too, the day I stop feeling that enjoyment will be the day I bow out. Shake Shack here in the States is taking BTC now. There's no way I'd spend BTC to buy a burger though and end up a meme someday (like the BTC pizza-day guy). Lol.

I very rarely store funds on any of these exchanges and wallets (usually only for the time of exchange or withdraw).
But reading that the personal data of the users are leaked, including ID cards, is honestly very scary.
Looks like using services, which requires KYC is actually dangerous, and not necessarily because of the possible loss of invested money.
Yeah, it's crazy. The identity/personal data-theft aspect of these hacks are far more concerning than just losing coins.

I remember working out at least for my witness specifically that most transactions on the hive blockchain use about 0.0000008 watts, this was back when the blockchain was averaging 120-250tx a block and my witness is not very efficient due to it's age, running a minimum of 200w/h just being on.
Since a live synced Witness node, for just block creation and validation can comfortably run on a 4 watt ultra low power mini server/pc it's outrageously efficient.
When you add API nodes it'll be more but not as much as you'd think since the API suite has been heavily improved performance wise over the last year or two.

I've seen some posts about the hardware people run and it does not have to be anything too special. The whole Hive infrastructure probably only uses a few kW. That's nothing compared to the data centres out there.
I see how enthusiast Hiveans are to be here, especially developers. So I think Hive is here to stay and always evolve and it's just a matter of time before it spreads its wings and become more popular. Combined with the fact that web2 social media are becoming every day more annoying, between tons of ads and bots, people just showing off and hating on each other...
As I keep saying, the biggest thing that Hive is still missing is a way to post short vertical videos. People are creating those to post on Instagram and Tiktok. They already are doing that. We just have to provide them a new place to do so. The difference of warmth they'll get from the audience will do the rest. That's my opinion
We have a core of users who will never leave, but I think a fair few new ones don't stick around too long. We need to keep them engaged and it's not just about rewards.
InLeo shorts does vertical video. I don't really like that format, but I know it's big. I've not been looking at InLeo recently, but I think they are doing a lot of development.

I really don't understand this KE malarkey, is it better to have a hi or a low number, to me it makes no sense, and not sure how it would affect my voting, I don't do auto voting. Any pointers in simple english please if you have any cheers 😇 👍
The higher the KE number, the more Hive you've taken out.
Conversely, a lower KE number means you haven’t withdrawn as much Hive yet.
A low number shows that you kept most of what you earned. I think anything under 1.0 is pretty good. I don't usually look at what people do with their rewards as they may need the money. I judge people by their content and engagement.

It's a proportion so can't go negative. We're lucky if we don't need to power down. I've done it a few times to pay for things like Hivefest, but I've built a nice stake.
