Follow Friday: Half a year away

The News

I was going to go with a Bon Jovi reference in the title, but @bozz beat me to it. I went with a twist on an Oasis song that I performed at an open mic last night. This year is zooming past and we need to value each day. It is HPUD tomorrow and I have some funds ready to stake. I am so close to 100k now.

Prices fron @coingecko

The crypto prices still cannot make up their mind which way to go, but I am happy that $HIVE is mostly holding up. I have plotted for the year so far and we were doing better in February/March/April. The price tends to follow what the rest of the market is doing, but I feel it could break out at any time. It just needs a nudge to go viral. If we got some big 'influencer' signing up and bringing in thousands of followers it could make a big difference. We did get a fair few new Hivers in Ghana recently, but it seems to need more than that. We need people to be buying $HIVE on the markets to impact the price. You need some HP to do certain things on Hive, so there are incentives to buy.

Hive Events

  • I would hope you know about HiveFest that is happening in Mexico in September. I will not be going this time.
  • If you cannot get to Mexico there is a meetup in Halifax, UK that weekend. I was looking to go, but have a band gig then.
  • There is Hive-Camp in southern Germany in August.
  • I just announced a crypto-walk in the UK a few weeks from now.
  • You can follow @hiveup-europe for news of events in Europe.

The Doghouse

I saw some discussions around Discord that made me think that we need to beware of entitlement on Hive. These is a fixed amount of rewards being distributed each day and we should not be feeling that we automatically deserve a share of it. It needs to be earned and the distribution is at the whims of the community. The picture is distorted by the use of automatic votes and trails. A few big accounts control a large share of the voting power and I think that power needs to be used carefully. You can delegate to these accounts or follow their trail, but your voting power may be better used elsewhere as many quality posts earn little. Manual voting can be a lot of work, but you could follow the trail of someone you trust who may support the kind of posts you would want to vote on.

I see voting as a responsibility on Hive. Of course I earn from it, but my vote may help convince people to stick with the platform. I mostly do it manually and scale my votes so that I can support a lot of people each day. I try to keep the voting power fairly high for maximum effect.

In the past I have done my share of downvoting to deal with abuse. I feel less need to do that these days, but I monitor some channels for when my help is needed. Hive will attract grifters as it grows and we need to be prepared to deal with them.

The End

As well as HPUD I will be compiling the #BritList tomorrow. I have not found too many new people recently, but perhaps some have become active again. Keeping people engaged with Hive is vital. Even when the price is lower than we would like we can still be earning $HIVE that could gain value eventually. There are various ways to keep your account creating income, so make the most of those.
