Follow Friday: Don't believe the hype

The News

Do not assume my titles mean anything as it may just be whatever pops into my head before I write the post.

Prices

There has been more price action this week. $HIVE continues to steadily climb whilst 'the other coin' has more radical moves that soon reverse. I am all in on Hive that offers all I need.

@stoodkev who brought us Hive Keychain is working on [multisig[(https://peakd.com/hive-139531/@stoodkev/hive-multisig-continuation-proposal) that will allow for all sorts of possibilities. Sometimes you need several people to authorise something.

Part of the battle for Hive to become accepted is to overcome scepticism about crypto in general. Reports like this one concentrate on the failures and scams. We need people to hear about the good Hive does.

Friday Follows

  • @hivetrending is still working on connecting Hive to the Fediverse. This is important as a lot of people who left some of the corporate platforms are using things like Mastodon instead and we want them to be able to see our content. Hive should not be a silo.
  • The @town-hall get-togethers have great potential to encourage collaboration between projects. I was reading the transcript of the latest one on the train this week. I have met a few of the people involved.
  • I have mentioned @lordbutterfly before, but then he is doing good work with the Hive documentary, but then he is also involved with the rally car. They have a video on YouTube that could do with more likes and you can subscribe to their feed.

Events

  • @buzzparty are doing great work on supporting meetups around the world. They are organising one in Germany next year. I could be tempted to attend that.
  • @alessandrawhite is over in the UK this month and is looking to meet some Hivers in London. That could be very possible for me.

The Doghouse

This may not be a instance of abuse, but it is a case of someone taking the wrong approach on Hive. @keys-defender are always looking for attempts to compromise accounts. In this case people had wallet memos about a survey that required login with Keychain. In general that is fairly safe as you have to confirm each transaction, but you should always be wary.

The account doing this ought to have at least done some posts about what they were doing. If an account has the default reputation (25) then it does not inspire confidence. If they post and are found to be nefarious then that reputation would soon sink.

I do not often look to see if I have any memos. I just did a check and there is nothing apart from what I would expect in the last couple of weeks.

Currently it is quite cheap to send spam on Hive. A memo only needs 0.001 $HIVE and you can send a fair few comments if you have a little HP. That may change as Hive grows. I believe the cost of transactions would go up if the system load got high and more expensive $HIVE could make memos less viable for those purposes.

You should always be wary of logging into sites you do not know well, especially if they want your actual keys. If someone gets your active key they can do transfers and with your master key they have full control of your account, including locking you out.

Practice safe hex.

The End

I am off to Barcamp London tomorrow. I am not sure if any other Hivers are going, but ticket sales closed last week. It is not a crypto event, but I would expect there to be a wide range of interests. I may take along some Hive merchandise and will talk to a few people.

Each of us can do something to market Hive. The first barrier is in raising awareness. If you mention it outside the Hive ecosphere then it can help.

Thanks for the mention! 😎

Related: HERE we are discussing greying out transfer memos in frontends once they are marked as malicious.

If we can have top witnesses blacklisting known malicious accounts so front ends can flag them it would be really useful.

I used to have an extension that put up a warning when I looked at an account that was on certain blacklists. Building that in would help protect those who are less aware of the risks.

It's already the case. Top-40 witnesses can blacklist users with my !hacked command and domains with the !phishing command.

Besides top-40 witnesses, regular users can blacklist users/domains too but at least 3 reports from users with reputation 50+ are needed.

All lists are public and live HERE

There is a whitelist for reputable domains and users.
Users that abuse these commands get downvoted, reports get automatically upvoted 😎

I also wrote an universal script to counter malicious actors and some frontends integrated it. I need to resume working on it at some point:
https://peakd.com/hive-139531/@keys-defender/phishing-on-hive-no-more-solution-for-all-frontends

It could happen sooner than later, since I intend to add more utility to my game (Crypto Shots) token by offering premium features in this and other projects of mine 🔥

I've been a little turned off by some of the proposals lately. It's becoming more and more evident that some people are just milking the HBD pool and not actually returning anything that equals the value of what they are getting paid. I removed several of my votes in support of proposals yesterday. We need to fight abuse on that side of things as much as we do content.

We do need to keep an eye on things to ensure people do what they promise, but the proposals system is powerful. As with the witnesses our votes matter, especially if he have a big stake.

I think a lot of people are not as informed as they should be about it and they just vote blindly. The whales supporting each other makes it less likely a shady proposal won't pass.

Hm
I love the fact that you made mention about how many posts people can make based on their HP
I hope something is done about that...

Thanks for the great information! I'm hoping to see Hive continue it's bull run. Never trust people with your private keys, always an unwise move. There are just to many nefarious individual out there looking to steal your crypto. I've not received any such spam, but would likely ignore it. I hope you're right that as Hive becomes more expensive it will be harder for these scammers to send out their spam.

Have fun at Barcamp London, sounds like fun

Cheers. I do worry about the people who are less tech savvy as they may not know how important key security is. At least Keychain helps reduce the risks.

I love Keychain, it makes everything safer and honestly so much easier! I worry about people new to crypto as well, I've been involved enough years to be adequately paranoid.

Interesting to hear some work is underway to hook up to the Fediverse. That would be incredible if that can be achieved.

I think there is still a way to go for that, but it could help matters.
