A special Scotch for Christmas, plus accoutrements

One of the presents I received at Christmas was a bottle of whisky from my sister and brother-in-law. He is a member of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society who issue some bottle from casks they get hold of. I also had a gift from my neighbour Dave who is a big whisky fan. That was a nice wooden box containing a couple of glasses, tongs, coasters and some whisky stones. The latter are literal stones that you put in the freezer and then use to cool your drink. The idea is that you do not have ice cubes diluting it.

Set up for a drink

Bottle labels are hard to photograph, but I just figured out how to put these two photos side by side.

So this whisky was finished off in a Jamaican rum barrel and is nine years old. It was bottled just before Christmas. It is a small bottle at 35cl, but I guess a bigger one could be quite expensive.

Stones in the glass

Of course I needed to have a glass, although Dave and I already started the bottle. This Scotch is quite sharp initially, so it does benefit from a splash of water just to take the edge off. I am not great at describing flavours and tastes, but I am quite happy with this one. It tastes like I expect a good Scotch to be. The glasses are nice too.

Certain experiences are enhanced by having the right environment and equipment. I treat a glass of whisky as a special treat and now I have some extra touches to add to the preparation. All part of the fun.

Life is a series of experiences and you should make the most of the good ones.

Cheers!

That looks awesome, I love good Scotch. That has a nice proof and finished in Jamaican rum casks, I bet it tastes great! The best Scotch I've ever had was Macallan 25, absolutely amazing. At $3K US a bottle a little out of my price range. Fortunately I wasn't paying the bill!

I don't think I've had an actual Macallan, but I hear good things about them. I couldn't justify paying crazy money for any drink.

I agree just way too much. Even a bottle of Macallan 12 year old runs around $80 US. Ten years ago it was half that!

My friend has one of their cheaper bottles, so maybe he will let me try it.

It's well worth trying, Macallan is one of my favorite Scotches. Another affordable one I like a lot is Oban 14, nice and smoky.

I am not great at describing flavours and tastes,

Same as my hubby. When I write a whisky post and ask him for his opinion he just say things like it's good, it's sharp, it's smooth, it's sweet, it's smoky etc. Both of us struggle to work out how people can find so many words to describe a whisky, and how one can taste flora, lemon, vanilla, chocolate, raspberry and god knows what in one sip of liquid!

Well this one wasn't smoky. Maybe slightly sweet. I see people go into great deal on the taste and even the smell, but I just don't have those skills. I'll just enjoy it anyway.

The beauty of cask whiskey is that you add the drops of water just before drinking, if you get the mix correct you will bring it down to to 35% proof and release the flavors, a real art form, enjoy your drink.

It seems this one is pretty strong. You can get really serious about all the details, but I just enjoy a drink now and then.

I really like stones over cubes for drinking neat. I tend find diluting throws off the flavor for me.

What is that 61.2 percent? Is that alcohol by volume? If so, that is a dang strong whisky!

I don't usually worry about the strength, but that may be higher than most. I don't drink enough to worry about getting drunk, but it will affect the flavour.

I wish you were just good at describing the flavor or taste but I’m sure it will have a good taste
Anyway, life has its ups and downs just as you have said but the good parts of it should be made memorable

I somehow ended up with 3 bottles of Whisky for Xmas. At least there's no expiry date as it will take me that many years to get through them.

I told people I didn't lots more for Xmas as I already have a fair few bottles. They tend to complain that they don't know what to get me and whisky is an easy option. That said, this one is a bit special.

I tend to go for the single malts rather than the big brands. There are so many of them out there. I have a small collection.

Very nice! Over the past couple of years I have massed a collection as consulting fees. It suits two purposes, first I have a great collection of Scotch for my guests (I don't indulge) and second I get an indication of what my customer believes my time to be worth, which at times isn't all that much :) You have an awesome sister and brother in law!

I love the stones! I drink my scotch "on the rocks" so how cool that I can now have it literally on the rocks, and all without diluting the flavor.

Yes, they are literal rocks. You should get some.

looks delicious even I am not a whiskey / scotch guy at all - bottle looks already pretty expensive.

I love scotch and partake of it the same way you do, from time to time as a special treat. A splash of water and some ice is all I require. Have been thinking about whiskey stones from time to time, but don't feel like I will get the right thing at a good price here in India. Let's see.

That bottle looks cool, though I found the cl usage interesting. Is it common to have volume in cl? I have normaly only seen litres and ml here in India.

I've not tended to have ice in my scotch, but I may use these. I think for bottles under a litre cl may get used, but I've not really noticed.

In UK I too would not use ice. In India the ambient temperature is much higher and I feel that when the maker says "best at room temperature" they are thinking of the 'normal' Scottish day :)
