Morning Ride: Riding the Cape

steevc just finished a 44.65km ride, that lasted for 337 minutes.
This ride helped steevc burn 1133.0 calories.

Description from Strava:
We have now left Boston. We picked up another hire car to drive out to Concord where we visited the home of Little Women author Louisa May Alcott. We also saw her grave at the Sleepy Hollow cemetery.

We had an unscheduled stop in Bedford (not the one I was born in) after getting a flat tyre.

We eventually made it to Hyannis on Cape Cod. Today we hired some bikes from Barb's Bikes in nearby Dennis. We rode over to Chatham on the east end of the Cape along a dedicated cycle path. There were just a few road crossings and brief riding on the road, but motorists were courteous.

Chatham is a busy little place. There are some amazing houses there. We stopped by the lighthouse to wander on the beach and dip our feet in the sea despite the warnings of great white sharks. It was very windy, but some people were determined to sit out on the sand.

We were looking for food so went to the fish market next. There was not much in the way of restaurants, but we saw masses of seals lying on the beach across the bay.

We got lunch at the Captain's Table in town. They do a nice tuna melt. It seems a little odd that restaurants here will serve you crisps (aka chips) in the bag with a sandwich.

The ride back was a little harder, but there are no big hills. That is the longest ride I have done in a while. Luckily it was not too hot and the trail was shaded. They even have some water refill stations.

It is a beautiful part of the world.

Nice ride what bike do you have now? I’m in the market for a good road bike.

I have a basic mountain bike. The hire bikes were comfy road bikes. I really don't know too much about bikes, but if I got a better one then I might ride more.

I want to get a good road bike, but they are so expensive... The last one I looked at was like $4000 which is a little out of my price range at the moment. The more reasonable ones are still like $1500!

Best to look for deals on previous models. You can spend as much as you want it seems.

So true I just watched a guy on Youtube build a bike worth as much as most people's car. The bike market is really strong as older models hold value. It seems like you just need to bite the bullet and buy a bike considering you can ride them for a few years and sell them for only a few hundred less than what you paid.

As it is hot today, people should spend most of their time in such places.

It sounds like you might be awfully close to @tattoodjay. I could be wrong though. I might have my states mixed up. Sounds like it was a great day!

We move on tomorrow to Providence. It's nice here and there was a lot more to explore. Maybe we'll come back some time.

That is cool. Are you going to make it to Newport Rhode Island? The cliff walk there is really great. Some big old houses to admire from the lumber, iron, and oil barons. Probably nothing like the castles you have over there, but they are still cool to see.

We may get there. Hoping the weather stays good as they have had tornadoes.

Yikes! That is no fun! We have a pretty big storm hitting us today as well. Kind of sucks because I was supposed to have some fiber pulled today.

We've been fairly lucky so far apart from some rain earlier on.

Lots of keen cyclists out there, but we just trundled along. It was pretty easy riding.

motorists were courteous

We noticed that when we went to California. It was absolutely wonderful crossing the roads, they all had an eye out for the vulnerable road users. I wonder if they get heftier fines over there?
The law has changed here a bit in favour of cyclists and walkers but I feel many people aren't aware yet... Sigh..

It is very obvious that you enjoyed the ride on the bike...

That’s a pretty solid trip and workout. At 37, I can’t really push myself to the limit that much that's why i require creatine and protein shakes to be in top condition.

I'm a fair bit older. I don't have any special diet, but eat fairly healthily. That's tricky when on holiday.

Lots of sharks off Chatham….

Cape Cod is awesome. Nantucket is especially nice.
Did you take the boat over ?

We didn't have time to get to the islands on this trip. I'll post about other boat trips.

You will have to come back to visit Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. It’s where all the Billionaires vacation …. They filmed Jaws off Martha’s Vineyard.

We saw the mansions at Newport. Some crazy money for those.

I find 50k's to be about the perfect length bike ride provided the weather is ok and you have a decent bike. I once made a mistake of going in a random ass direction on a less than stellar bike for about 25km and by the time I got back home I couldn't feel my butt anymore and it really hurt. Perhaps I should get some of those padded shorts.

I was a little sore after our ride, but that's probably partly down to not cycling much. The seats were well padded.
