Description from Strava:
I am not really a cycling fan, but I have been to a few events. When I heard that the Tour of Britain Stage 3 was passing very close to home I could not resist having a look. The race is from Milton Keynes to Ampthill, but it swings out east to Henlow that is just up the road. I thought about running there, but decided to use the bike for a change.

There was some rain this morning with more forecast, but it cleared up before the race. I rode over to Henlow where the kids were all coming out of the school to watch. This is obviously a big operation with loads of support vehicles. There were lots of police motorcyclists operating a rolling road block. One would ride up to block a side road and then go on ahead as the next one came along. Then there were some race officials in cars, camera crews and even some guys with spare wheels on a motorbike. Eventually the lead riders came through some way ahead of the peloton who I took some video of. They were followed by all the team cars with spare bikes plus various emergency vehicles.

After they had all passed I rode on to catch them again further on. I had the kids cheering me along as well as a few comments from others. I went out into the countryside at Stanford. The race took a longer route as they had to go around a big loop twice. I met up with a friend there and we saw them pass. They would be covering 133km in about three hours. I could definitely not do that.

There were a lot of keen cyclists out who zoomed past me. Someone pointed out that my back wheel is a bit bent, so I need to get that looked at. I do not use the bike too much, but I knew it was not quite right.

I rode into Shefford where I thought I might see the racers again, but I must have missed them. I got a coffee there before riding home. I was quite warm, but happy to have missed the rain. I did take a coat just in case. That is my longest ride in a while and I felt it. I think that cycling uses different muscles to running.

I really ought to cycle more, but I need to get the bike looked at first. There is a cycle repair place up the road. I do not use it enough to justify buying anything new and expensive.

Ride free!

That's cool that everything is so accessible for you on a bicycle. We don't get that unless you are right in town.

I don't think it's come past here recently, so it was a nice opportunity. I expect you must have some big cycle races too. There will be smaller club events going on too. It's just a big job to close so many roads.

Are you a long way from local facilities? We don't have many shops near us. I can reach some by bike if I have to.

We live in the country between a small town and a bit bigger town. It takes us about ten minutes to get to the mall area, but that is on an expressway where the speed limit is 75 MPH. Riding into the small town would be possible, but you would have to deal with the folks driving 55 MPH on the road. It's about a two mile drive to the edge of the small town. 3 miles to the center of it.

It's about 4 miles to the nearest town centre from here plus there are other villages in the immediate area, so cycling is an option and there are cycle paths to some of them. You really need that infrastructure to get people out of their cars.

Yeah, we don't have the paths like that. I wish we did. It would make things a whole lot easier. If you live in the city you have sidewalks, but I didn't really have a bike back when I lived there.

I have been on a bike since when I was a kid going alone at school so I will always like it... Sometimes it's worth a ride!

It's a nice way to explore if you can avoid busy roads. I was on some lanes, but the car drivers gave me space.

Still not my friend. I've seen no proof that he is, but then I'm not talking to him generally. A friend would give me more votes.

Enjoy your weekend. Don't expect to hear from me so you can take time off leaving me comments. I cannot fix your problems.
