What To Watch Tonight

Hostage

What would happen if a dark group of extremists kidnapped the husband of the British prime minister? This is the core story of the new Netflix series, which also carries several further implications. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Tight editing.
  • Solid direction.
  • It has everything you would want from a series of this type: kidnappings, blackmail, explosions, sex tapes, diplomatic incidents, coup-style twists, dangerous media leaks, murders, erotic videos exposed to the public.
  • It is only 5 episodes, so I never felt it dragged. It keeps you hooked and makes you want to see what happens next.
  • The lead actress portraying the British prime minister is excellent, with the cold-blooded composure of a strong politician.
  • Julie Delpy did a fantastic job.
  • It maintains balance.
  • Quite a few twists.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • It has its excesses.
  • Script-wise, it has several gaps and some conveniences in service of the plot. Still, the overall result is noted. For example, is it possible that the prime minister’s husband would not have security? 🤷‍♂️
  • The daughter as a character was poorly written.
  • There is no particular depth given to all characters or their development.
  • The ending fell short of expectations for me.

The Thursday Murder Club

The story follows four eccentric retirees who enjoy solving old crime cases at their quiet retirement home. When a real murder happens right before their eyes, their “Club” turns into an amateur yet highly effective team of detectives. Mystery, humor and… retired detectives. A new Netflix film. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • I always like Helen Mirren.
  • A classic whodunnit with plenty of humor.
  • The pacing is good.
  • The ensemble cast is interesting as the story unfolds and they have quite good chemistry with each other.
  • Pierce Brosnan also stands out for me.
  • It has a mystery not mind-blowing, but it keeps you engaged.
  • An easy and pleasant watch.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • Basic direction, perhaps understandable for this kind of film, even though it is directed by Chris Columbus.
  • It does not reinvent the wheel script-wise. The plot is quite simple, though not particularly bothersome.
  • Some performances are mediocre.
  • It has cohesion issues in certain parts.

Maybe the other one would be interesting (I'm retired, and the actors are good). 😎
